IRB Approval from Another Institution
Do you already have an IRB approval from another institution?
DMACC may waive its own IRB oversight and let that IRB take the lead in reviewing and overseeing your research project.
Next Steps
-
Confirm IRB Approval
Make sure you have IRB approval from the other institution. -
Email DMACC’s IRB Office, irb@dmacc.edu.
Get in touch with DMACC’s IRB and provide the contact person for the initial IRB. -
Submit Required Documents to DMACC
Send in all necessary paperwork, like the IRB approval letter, research protocol, and consent forms. -
Wait for Final Approval
DMACC will contact the other IRB and decide whether to approve the IAA. -
Start Research
Once both IRBs approve the IAA, you can begin your research. -
Keep a Copy
Save the signed IAA for your records.
What is an IRB Authorization Agreement (IAA)?
An IAA is a written agreement that allows one institution’s IRB to oversee and approve
a research project. Other institutions involved agree to rely on that IRB’s decisions.
Why Use an IAA?
An IAA simplifies the process by allowing one IRB to manage the review, even when
multiple institutions are involved. For example, DMACC may waive its own IRB review
and let the initial IRB take the lead. This keeps ethical standards consistent and
avoids duplicate reviews. The signed agreement must be kept on file and may be reviewed
by federal agencies.
