Advanced Nurse Aide

​​​​This course is designed for Nurse Aides who have completed the Nurse Aide 75 Hours (Basic) state approved course. The course provides an opportunity to gain the additional competencies and clinical experiences needed to seek employment in a hospital. The first 45 hours of the course are held in a classroom/lab and the remaining 30 hours of clinical will be in a hospital. Job opportunities include, but are not limited to, EKG tech, Emergency Tech, Scope Tech, Surgery Tech, and OB Tech. The agency or hospital will provide additional training in these specialized areas. The student must provide proof they have successfully completed a 75 hour state approved Nurse Aide course.

Registration

  • Registration Dates: DMACC Nurse Aide students follow college wide credit registration dates.  Please click here for the dates registration open
     
  • Registration Deadlines:  Registration for all Nurse Aide classes closes at noon 3 days prior to the start of each class. This allows us time to complete required background checks. 

 

Class Schedule

  • Nurse Aide classes can be found by searching for Nurse Aide Orderly 172 (75 Hour) or 182 (Advanced) here.  When reading the schedule, be sure to read all lines with days/times for the class (CRN) you are considering.  You may find as many as 7-8 lines as these include your theory, lab and clinical dates for the class.  Please note: Class schedules are subject to change at any time.

PREREQUISITE FORMS FOR SPRING CLASSES CAN BE SUBMITTED NOW! 

  • Prerequisite Forms:  If you have already submitted forms for the Fall 2020 Advanced Nurse Aide classes successfully but did not register, you do not need to resubmit those forms for Spring 2021 classes.
     
  • Prerequisite Deadlines:  All prerequisites must be received and approved before you can register. Allow up to 5 days for review.

Submitting Advanced Nurse Aide Prerequisites:
See Steps 1, 2, and 3 below. Once ALL Step 2 and Step 3 forms are approved and processed, you will receive a CONGRATS notification to your DMACC email with Online Registration instructions.

 

Step 1 - DMACC Application For Admission

You must have an accepted DMACC Application for Admission on file (this means within the last 3 years you have been accepted to DMACC or been enrolled).  

If you do not currently have an active application on file, you must complete an online DMACC application and select one of the following: 

  1. “Nurse Aide” as your major if you only plan on taking Nurse Aide classes OR 

  2. “Nursing (RN) – AAS” as your major if you are taking Nurse Aide courses as a pre-requisite for one of DMACC’s Nursing program.  

  3. “Practical Nursing (LPN) – Diploma” as your major if you are taking Nurse Aide courses as a pre-requisite for our LPN program.

Step 2 - Online Prerequisite Forms

» Notice & Release of Criminal Background Check  This form gives DMACC permission to run the required background check for you.  Students do not have to run background checks on their own.
» Criminal History Record Check

DMACC will run a background check on every last name you have had in your life (ex: maiden, married, adopted, etc.).  When filling out this form, pay close attention to the “Do you have previous last name(s)?” question.  If you have had more than one last name it will prompt you to list them there.  

Criminal convictions or documented history of abuse may prevent students from participating in clinical education experience.   Students unable to participate in clinical education will be unable to complete the course requirements.

Step 3 – Online Prerequisite Forms Requiring Uploading of Document

The following forms have an additional form or document that will need to be uploaded along with completing the online form.  See chart for details.

» Proof of Successful Completion of a State Approved Basic Nurse Aide​Provide proof of completion of a state approved 75-Hour Basic Nurse Aide course.  This can be any of the following:
  1. A transcript showing a passing grade in the course for Nurse Aide registration purposes (this can be either an official or unofficial transcript)
  2. A scanned copy of your completion certificate in the course
  3. If you took it at DMACC, a copy of your Degree Works showing completion of the course

 Temporarily Waived

All students must provide proof that they do not have active TB by having this form completed by your doctor.   You may choose to have two skin tests or one TB blood test.  Form must be complete before uploading.  Incomplete forms will not be accepted.

  • Skin tests: You MUST have TWO TB tests administered and read by a physician. There must be a minimum of 7 days between the date the first TB test is administered and when the second TB test is administered. 
  • Quantiferon Gold or T-spot TB blood tests are also acceptable, if your provider offers them. A copy of blood test lab results are required. 
  • If you have a positive test, you will need to have and submit a report from a chest x-ray.  See form for details. 

Temporarily Waived 

​All students must have a current physical (within one year of the end of the class you choose to take) as well as proof of required immunizations.   

It is often easiest to print this full form, complete Part 1 and take it to your doctor’s appointment.  If you have had a physical in the last year, that will still be current through the end of your class, you can have you physician fill out the paperwork based on that physical.

Once forms are complete and signed off on by your doctor, you can upload the form.


 Temporarily WaivedProof of Flu Vaccine is required if you are taking a class that meets anytime from October 1 thru May 31.  Take this form with you to the location where you get your flu shot and have the provider fill it out, documenting that you received your shot.
Temporarily Waived

​Proof of successful completion of one of these approved CPR modules must be provided:

  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) OR American Heart Association Heartcode (this is an online course followed by a face-to-face skills test) 
  • American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer OR American Red Cross Health Care Provider course

Application & Registration

Students who wish to register for the nurse aide courses will need to apply for admission, be accepted at DMACC, and complete prerequisite packet prior to enrolling in the courses.

We will only accept completed packets. Packets can be submitted two ways only:

  • Scan completed full packet and email to cna@dmacc.edu from your DMACC email address, or
  • Deliver packet in person to the DMACC Ankeny Campus Building 24, Room 308. (Note: packets will not be ac​cepted in person at any other location.)
