Jumpstart may be for you!

If you:

  • Are an English Language Learner in the High Intermediate to Advanced Level
  • Are a student without a high school diploma/equivalency or currently enrolled in the HiSET program
  • Need extra academic help to complete your training

Support may include help learning industry terms, strengthening math, reading, writing, and English language skills in or out of the classroom, finding a job, and getting ready for skills testing/certification.

Eligibility Documents

IMPORTANT – due to recent federal changes, to register for Adult Education classes, new students must provide eligibility documentation.

Accepted documents include:

  • Real ID (ID with gold star in the right corner)
  • US Passport, US Passport Card, Naturalization Certificate
  • US Birth Certificate
  • Green Card (Form I-551)
  • I-94 form with code “RE” + photo ID
  • I-94 form with code “AS” + photo ID
  • I-94 form marked “Parole”, valid for greater than or equal to one year + photo ID
  • USCIS Notice/Letter Of Approval + photo ID
  • Prima Facie Determination + photo ID

Currently DMACC offers Jumpstart programs in these areas:

CNA

Nurse Aide (CNA)

Prepares students for a career in the healthcare field by participating in a CNA training that provides extra academic support and career preparation. Students complete required classroom/lab and clinical hours while receiving additional supports to prepare for the state CNA written and skills exams required to be eligible for employment.

  • 16-week course
  • Offered: January and August 2025 at DMACC Urban
  • Cost: Free for qualifying students

CDL

Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)

Helps English Language Learners get ready for a career in the trucking industry by preparing for the Commercial Learner’s Permit exam, enhancing job readiness skills, and learning career-specific vocabulary. Upon completion of CDL Jumpstart, students will transition into the DMACC CDL program to receive their Class A or B CDL Certification.

  • 4-week course
  • Offered: April and October 2025 at DMACC Urban; May 2025 at Perry VanKirk Center
  • Cost: Free for qualifying students

Food Service Worker

Food Service

This program supports English Language Learners with high‑intermediate English skills who are interested in starting or advancing a career in the food service industry. Students build food safety vocabulary, strengthen English language skills, and complete the ServSafe® Certified Food Protection Manager course during the program. Participants also explore food service career pathways, workplace expectations, and essential soft skills needed for success in the industry. 

  • 6-week course
  • Offered: March 2026
  • Cost: Scholarships available for qualifying students
