DMACC is excited to offer new program for Class B CDL for those students near Newton wishing to have a flexible training schedule. This program will have up to 70 contact hours (approximately 30 hours in an on-line course and up to 40 hours of hands on driving training at the DMACC Newton Campus). This course is fully compliant with the new FMCSA regulations for Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT).
Class Times/Schedule
Online training (approx. 30 hours):
The online portion of the training can be completed on your own schedule making this option very flexible for your schedule.
Driving/Behind the Wheel (BTW) training (up to 40 hours):
Class B (Newton) will offer daytime classes (Monday-Friday) for the driving portion for the training that will culminate with testing with a DOT examiner to obtain a Class B CDL with Airbrakes. Class will be offered on the day schedule below and dates can be offered to fit your schedule TBD.
Monday through Wednesday: 1 instructor with 2 trainees splitting the day; 1 trainee BTW from 07:30 to 11:30 and 1 trainee BTW from 12:30 to 4:30 conducted at the DMACC Newton Campus; balance of the day when not BTW am or pm practicing DOT pre-trip inspection (self study).
Thursday: 07:30 am – 4:30 pm; DOT Testing (at DMACC Transportation Institute, 2081 NE 54th Ave, Des Moines, IA 50313.)
Friday: 07:30 am – 4:30 pm Re-test DOT at DMACC Transportation Institute with more Behind the Wheel practice (if required).
Tuition
Total Cost for the Class B Newton program is $1400.00 which includes fuel, DOT testing and miscellaneous fees.
What’s not covered in the tuition? Any costs to complete the pre-requisites to starting in the program e.g. DOT physical (approx. $100), Commercial Learner’s Permit (approx. $8), DOT licensing fees would be paid directly to the Iowa DOT at CDL issuance and will vary depending on your last renewal of your driver’s license and which endorsements you wish to add to your license (Hazmat, tanker etc.).

- Complete all pre-requisites in our entrance requirements for training at Entrance Requirements
- Collect all documents and complete our checklist to getting started in the program from the information packet.
- Registration will be in person to collect all documentation for required DOT/FMCSA regulations and completion of a DOT pre-employment drug screen.
Financial Aid
There are financial assistance options available through the GAP/GEER program. Students must be accepted into the GAP/GEER program, and work directly with the Program Navigator in this process.
