Responsible for the coordination, collection, and transportation of recyclables to various recycling facilities. Acts as an internal and external liaison for the recycling program, building and maintaining relationships with customers and the community. Handles customer service questions and concerns in a timely and efficient manner.


The following duties are normal for this position. Duties and responsibilities are listed to reflect a sense of key priority. They are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Collects and transports recyclables to Metro Waste Authority facilities and other recycling facilities.
  • Monitors recycling activities and collection. Coordinates commodity collection with vendors.
  • Maintains recycling records for review and annual reporting. Completes daily reports as required.
  • Bales recyclables.
  • Loads and offloads commodities from trucks and trailers and prepares shipments for market.
  • Identifies opportunities to use systems and create processes to streamline routing logistics.
  • Collaborates with staff, as well as customers, to modify collection means and frequency to meet the evolving needs of those we serve.
  • Operates all assigned material handling and transport equipment.
  • Conducts house-side collection and transports material to the Metro Hazardous Waste Drop-off.
  • Provides prompt and courteous service to both internal and external customers and educates on proper waste handling procedures through effective written and verbal communication.
  • Participates in all safety training, follows established safety procedures, makes recommendations for safety improvements, and corrects unsafe acts or conditions when appropriate.
  • Follows established procedures for the safe handling, identification, and segregation of materials throughout the receiving process.
  • Prepares household hazardous waste for disposal or reutilization in accordance with 40 CFR and complies with all the requirements of 40 and 49 CFR related to packaging, marking, labeling, and records keeping
  • Maintains current Hazardous Waste Handling certification. Prepares hazardous material shipping papers. Ensures all hazardous materials are placed in the approved storage areas.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of Metro Waste Authority’s values (Leadership, Integrity, Positivity, Teamwork, and Innovation) and applies them to the position, and assigned responsibilities, as well as to all interactions with customers and co-workers.
  • Understands the EMS policy and what it means to Metro Waste Authority.
  • Understands how the position and job responsibilities impact the environment and what can be done to improve them. Recommends improvements through the suggestion box or to the EMS core team or the management team in cases where the position does not have the authority to make improvements.
  • Maintains knowledge of latest technological developments and provides subject matter expertise in these areas.
  • Performs other special projects, duties, and responsibilities as assigned.


  • Current Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) - Hazardous material endorsement, preferred
  • 2-4 years’ experience handling and processing of hazardous waste products is preferred.
  • 40-hour OSHA Certification is preferred.
  • Basic computer skills


  • Sufficient dexterity and eye, hand, and finger coordination to operate computer office and laboratory equipment.
  • Occasional reaching and handling of objects weighing fifty (50) pounds, pushing, and pulling of objects weighing up to six hundred (600) pounds, and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • Frequently stands, walks, or drives for extended periods of time
  • Ability to use and/or wear all required protective equipment and clothing, including a respirator.


  • Knowledge of standard techniques and chemical characteristics necessary to make accurate identification and classification of hazardous waste materials.
  • Ability to classify all types of household hazardous waste and skill in accurate reading of chemical analysis and the understanding of their characteristics in the identification process.
  • Knowledge of RCRA, OSHA, DOT, and EPA regulatory requirements for the handling, storage, transportation, and disposal of hazardous waste.


  • Direct telephone, in-person and written interaction with co-workers, customers and vendors.
  • Ability to motivate other employees in safety, regulatory compliance, and customer service functions


  • Ongoing exposure to toxic agents such as pesticides and poisons, potentially explosive or other unknown risks from incoming materials, and odors from solvents and other chemical products.
  • Exposure to excessive heat during summer and excessive cold in winter.
  • Exposure to moving machinery such as baler, forklift, and related equipment.
  • All employees, supervision, and management have responsibilities for establishing a safety culture that results in zero accidents. It is the employee’s responsibility to follow all safety policies and procedures and to notify the appropriate person(s) in the event they witness an unsafe activity.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $41,000.00 - $62,000.00 per year
