Job Responsibilities:

- Arranges & conducts funeral & memorial ceremonies in a professional, organized & caring manner consistent with company policies & procedures

- Negotiates & enters into funeral contracts

-Handles contracts, legal documents, & collection of payments in accordance with company policies

-Ensures client families are informed of special recognitition/services available for veterans & ensures the delivery of selected recognition/services

- Arranges for the interment or cremation of human remains

- Confirms authorization to proceed with the service arrangements

- Verifies identification of the deceased & authorization for embalming

- Cares for the deceased in a respectful manner while performing a variety of tasks which may include: performing removals & transfers including lifting of deceased human remains; dressing & preparing caskets; coordinating & assisting with funeral services & visitations

- Supervises/assists in funeral services by: supervising the parking of cars; ushering; driving funeral vehicles; assisting at chapel & church services; assisting at the cemetery; delivering of flowers, caskets, urn, photos & other personal keepsakes or mementos of client families; setting up & removal of chairs; participating at special functions

- Handles aftercare including delivery of documentation, stationery, information on insurance, health benefits & pension & pre-arrangements for next of kin

- Handles pre-need sales where applicable and/or ensures potential pre-need referrals are shared with Family Service Counselors

- Ensures adherence to all professional, municpal, provincial/state & federal licensing authority, regulations & rules applicable to the provision of funeral services

- Prepares & accurately completes documents & online entries related to services, cremations, maintenance

- Promotes & maintains a safe & healthy work environment

- Retains heritage & grows market share through active involvement with community, religious & other organizations

Minimum Requirements

- High School diploma or equivalent

- Completion of a degree training program at an accredited mortuary college or technical school specializing in funeral service or mortuary science as required by state/provincial law


- Apprentice, Funeral Director experience as required by state/province law & as prescribed by each state board

- Current state/province issued driver's license with an acceptable driving record

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

- Basic knowledge of religious & fraternal organizations' customs

- Knowledge of computers & some software including MS Office Suite required

- High level of compassion & integrity

- Good communication skills

- Problem solving skills

- Ability to multi-task & set priorities

POSITION SUMMARY: Perform various tasks to arrange and direct funeral services, such as coordinating transportation of body to mortuary, interviewing family and other authorized persons to arrange the details of mortuary services, including selecting pallbearers, aiding with the selection of religious rites, and providing transportation for mourners.  
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: • Obtain information needed to complete legal documents, such as death certificates and burial permits. • Consult with families and friends of the deceased to arrange funeral details, such as obituary notice, casket selection, or plans for services.  • Perform embalming duties and oversee in the preparation and care of the remains of people who have died.  • Contact cemeteries to schedule the opening and closing of graves.  • Removed deceased remains from place of death. • Arrange for clergy members to perform needed services.  • Provide information on funeral service options, products, or merchandise and maintain casket display area.  • Offer counsel and comfort to bereaved families and friends.  • Maintain financial records order merchandise or repair accounts.  • Plan and coordinate funerals, burials, or cremations, including arranging details such as floral delivery and the time and place of services.  • Close caskets and lead funeral cortège to church or burial sites.  • Direct preparations and shipment of bodies for out-of-state burial.  • Inform survivors of benefits for which they may be eligible.  • Provide or arrange transportation between sites for the remains, mourners, pallbearers, clergy and family. • Additional duties, as assigned.

Physical Demands  The employee is required to frequently stand, walk, sit, use hands and fingers, reach and lift with arms, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is required to frequently lift more than 100 pounds without assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision; distance vision; peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus. 
Work Environment The employee is working in an environment that is occasionally in wet or humid conditions (non-weather), with fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and infectious diseases. The employee may also work in outdoor weather conditions, with extreme cold or extreme heat.
