The DMACC Transportation Institute has been awarded an $87,860 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to help train veterans for jobs as commercial truck drivers.

A total of $2 million in Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator Safety Training (CMV-OST) grants were awarded to 16 schools nationwide this year as part of a larger effort to enhance commercial motor vehicle (CMV) safety.

“This grant will be used to fund direct tuition grants to veterans, as well as their immediate family members, to train in the DMACC Transportation Institute’s Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) program,” said Dave Pfiffner, Director of the DMACC Transportation Institute. “We graduate approximately 200 students per year from the program, and we’re looking forward to training even more students in an industry where safe and skilled drivers are constantly in high demand by employers.”

The CMV-OST grant program awards funding to a variety of educational institutions that provide commercial truck and bus driving training, including accredited public or private colleges, universities, vocational-technical schools, post-secondary educational institutions, truck driver training schools, associations, and state and local governments.

“FMCSA is committed to working with all of its state and local partners to reduce crashes and improve safety on America’s roadways,” said FMCSA Administrator Raymond P. Martinez. “These important grants demonstrate the agency’s commitment to providing local areas with the resources they need to make a difference for commercial motor vehicle safety.”

Pfiffner said veterans interested in the grant program should call the DMACC Transportation Institute at (515) 965-7450 and are also encouraged to attend an upcoming information session. The sessions provide an overview of all options available to prospective students. Information sessions are held from 5-6 p.m. every Monday and Thursday at the Institute, which is located at 2081 NE 54th Ave. in Des Moines.
