Join us on Wednesday, April 28th at 1:30 PM for an in-depth, interactive discussion about housing disparities, laws, and other housing issues in Iowa in honor of National Fair Housing Month. Our panelists are Joshua V. Barr (Director, City of Des Moines Civil & Human Rights Commission), Karla Janning (Housing Programs Coordinator, Region XII Council of Governments), Lauren Johnson (Director of Communications and Community Outreach, Polk County Housing Trust Fund), and Kourtney Kirkpatrick (Fundraising Director, HOME, Inc.).

Lauren Johnson is a native of Clive, Iowa and serves as the Director of Communications and Community Outreach for the Polk County Housing Trust Fund in Des Moines. She is responsible for developing and leading strategic initiatives that translate research and housing policy into actionable understanding.

Joshua V. Barr is an Emmy award-winning, transformational leader from South Carolina presently serving as the Des Moines Civil & Human Rights Director. The work of advancing housing and other civil rights opportunities is in Mr. Barr’s blood as he is a descendent of enslaved Africans and understands first-hand the socio-economic challenges that still exist for marginalized communities and how those challenges affect the well-being of an entire community. He believes that true change must come from within and works tirelessly with organizations, communities, and individuals to help them improve inside out.

Kourtney Kirkpatrick has served as HOME, Inc.’s Fundraising Director since October 2018. She brings nearly 10 years of experience in fundraising and development to increase HOME, Inc.’s efforts to create more affordable housing opportunities. She works closely with HOME, Inc.’s Board of Directors, donors, and community partners to build the HOME, Inc. brand, grow the donor base, and develop awareness throughout Central Iowa.

Karla Janning has worked with Region XII and affordable housing since 2013. In that time, she has worked in all aspects of housing from inspection work to administration of programs to development of affordable housing units in rural Iowa. Region XII’s portfolio of program administration includes funds from FHLB, CDBG, HOME & HPG along with many others over the 25 years Region XII has been administering housing programs. Karla is a certified housing inspector and licensed Visual Risk Assessor/Sampling Technician.
