DMACC's Celebration of the Literary Arts

Campus: Ankeny
Location: Bldg 2 Room 25b

Four authors will read from their works on the DMACC Ankeny Campus in Bldg. #2 Room 25B during the Celebration of Literary Arts. One will include:

Kevin Brockmeier will read from 10:10 to 11:05 a.m. Monday, April 3.  He is the author of four novels, two short-story collections and a children's novel.  His work has appeared in The New Yorker, McSweeney's, Zoetrope, Tin House, Best American Short Stories, The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror, and New Stories from the South. Brockmeier has received three O. Henry Awards, the PEN USE Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a NEA Grant and was named Granta Magazine's Best Young American Novelist.

In addition, Baxter, Mayhew Bergman, Faizullah and de la Paz will have a book signing and reading from their works at 7 p.m., Monday, April 3 at Beaverdale Books. DMACC Creative Writing Contest Winners will also read their works starting at 6:30 p.m.

All Celebration of Literary Arts events are free and open to the public.

Four authors will read from their works on the DMACC Ankeny Campus in Bldg. #2 Room 25B during the Celebration of Literary Arts.  These will include:

  • Charles Baxter will read from 9:40 to 11:05 a.m., Tuesday, April 4.  He is the author of five novels, including Feast of Love, which was nominated for the National Book Award. Baxter has also written five short-story collections, including Gryphon, and two collections of essays on writing.  He's been included in several anthologies, including Best American Short Stories, and has won multiple prizes and awards.  Baxter currently teaches at the University of Minnesota, as well as at the Warren Wilson MFA program.
  • Megan Mayhew Bergman will also read from 9:40 to 11:05 a.m., Tuesday, April 4.  She is the author of Almost Famous Women and Birds of a Lesser Paradise.  Her works has appeared in The New York Times, The Best American Short Stories, New Stories from the South, McSweeney's, Tin House and One Story, among other publications. Mayhew Bergman is the Associate Director of Bennington College's MFA program.

In addition, Baxter, Mayhew Bergman, Faizullah and de la Paz will have a book signing and reading from their works at 7 p.m., Monday, April 3 at Beaverdale Books. DMACC Creative Writing Contest Winners will also read their works starting at 6:30 p.m.

  • Charles D'Ambrosio will read from his works from 12:50 to 1:45 p.m.,Wednesday, April 5.  He is the author of two collections of short stories, The Point and The Dead Fish Museum, which was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award, as well as the essay collections, Orphans and Loitering:  New and Collected Essays.  D'Ambrosio has been the recipient of a Whiting Writer's Award, a Lannan Fellowship and his work has been widely anthologized and selected for the Pushcart Prize, Best American Short Stories and the O. Henry Award. His first book was a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Award.  D'Ambrosio currently teaches fiction at the Iowa Writers' Workshop.
