DMACC Small Business Award Eligibility and Criteria

Eligible candidates must meet the minimum following qualifications: 

  • Business must be incorporated, headquartered and/or located in the state of Iowa and DMACC region.
  • Business must submit an application form for acceptance and participation in the awards ceremony.
  • At least one of the executive team representatives must attend the event to accept the award.
  • If a previous award recipient, business may resubmit a nomination in a different award category three years after receiving the previous award.


DMACC Small Business Awards will be ​selected in the following categories and based upon the following criteria:

Most Innovative:

  • Recognized as a cutting-edge company transforming an industry or making significant improvements in a particular process
  • Developed a unique approach, product, or service resulting in a strategic advantage in the marketplace
  • Employs a maximum of 200 employees

Young Entrepreneur:

  • Is 40 Years of Age or Younger
  • ​Shows evidence of success as measured by sales and profits
  • Demonstrates development and utilization of innovative or creative business methods
  • Exhibits entrepreneurial potential for long-term success
  • Employs a maximum of 200 employees

Dennis Albaugh Award:

  • Completed a minimum of 12 credit hours or received a degree, certificate or diploma from Des Moines Area Community College
  • Makes a significant impact in their local community
  • Employs a maximum of 200 employees​​

Top Growth Company:

  • Demonstrates growth in number of employees (sustained over a minimum of 3 years)
  • Displays an increase in sales and/or unit volume
  • Exhibits staying power: substantiated history of an established business, steady growth including an increased net worth, successfully responded to an adverse situation
  • Employs 5-200 employees
  • Earns at least $500,000 in sales​

Small Business of The Year (Premier Award):

  • Demonstrates growth in number of employees (sustained over a minimum of 3 years)
  • Displays an increase in sales/and or unit volume
  • Exhibits staying power: substantiated history of an established business, steady growth including an increased net worth, successfully responded to an adverse situation
  • Demonstrates innovativeness of product or service
  • Provides contributions to aid community-oriented projects
  • Employs 5-200 employees
  • Earns at least $1 million in sales
