Marc Dickinson

Professor of Creative Writing, Literature and Composition

DMACC Ankeny Campus

"The most rewarding thing about teaching is encouraging students to be enthusiastic about writing, and see them try new things in their work," said Dickinson.

"A good day in the classroom is when I can walk away knowing I opened up someone's world, and the best days are when I walk away with the same feeling because students taught me to look at something in a new way as well."

Dickinson earned a BA and MA in English from University of Northern Iowa and an MFA in Creative Writing from Colorado State University. Several of Dickinson's short stories have been published and he has earned many awards including being named winner of the American Literary Review prize for fiction writing.

Each spring Dickinson helps organize the Celebration of Literary Arts festival at the DMACC Ankeny Campus. Local and national award-winning writers and poets participate in discussions, readings and mentoring. The event is free and open to the public.

"I think DMACC is a great community college because we are able to expose students to cultural concepts that they wouldn't encounter in everyday life," said Dickinson. "We have such a strong faculty that includes instructors with multiple degrees, personal connections in their fields of study and real-life experiences in their area of expertise."
