“I graduated from the DMACC Respiratory Therapy Program in 2006, and it was life changing,” Boeckmann said. “I had two professors that believed in me and encouraged me to take on roles I didn’t believe I had the ability to do -- as a clinical instructor and a tutor to students in the program. They saw something in me that I did not see in myself.”
Boeckmann supports her students in must the same way. “I have extremely high expectations of my students,” she said. “I value DMACC and the respiratory profession, and I want students to graduate understanding and feeling like they worked hard to be where they are and proud of where they came from.”
Now active at the state and national levels in her field, Boeckmann works to advance the respiratory care profession. She is a long-term board member and past president of the Iowa Society for Respiratory Care and a former American Lung Association board member. She has also been a consultant for the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) and the NBRC Therapist Multiple Choice (TMC) Exam. She is also a recipient of the DMACC Alumni Early Achievement Award, for exemplary personal or professional achievement or volunteer service to their community. In 2019, Boeckmann received an Outstanding Alumni Award from DMACC’s Alumni Association.
Before joining the DMACC faculty in 2013, Boeckmann was Director of Clinical Education in the Respiratory Care Program at Hawkeye Community College. In the Des Moines area, she has worked with facilities such as On With Life, Mercy Medical Center, Mary Greeley Medical Center, and the VA of Central Iowa. These experiences provided her with an excellent foundation of the respiratory care profession.
“School was never been easy for me, and I had to work extra hard to be successful. So, teaching was an area I never considered. But I learned that when you love what you are learning, the understanding comes much easier, and it’s FUN!” she said. “I am honored to be teaching in the program that created a belief and success in myself that I didn’t know I had.”
