In general, this lab supports college mathematics courses that include arithmetic through the calculus. It also supports math applications in chemistry, biology, and general science. While the Center cannot offer expertise in every discipline at all times, faculty members work to provide as wide a range as possible. Students are also referred to Peer-Tutoring Services for help.
College students can simply drop in to the Urban Des Moines AAC and work with instructors who will help assess academic skill levels and may develop individualized supplemental study programs. Students may also obtain specific instructional support in the courses they are taking. Any student who has difficulty understanding particular concepts or problem solving methods usually bring their study materials and texts to the Center to identify, clarify, and practice the concepts involved.
This Lab serves GED students who are preparing for the Mathematics test. It also serves high school students who are working toward the DMACC or their “home school” diploma by offering required math and science credit courses.
Pre-Admissions students preparing to enter DMACC and who have not had pre-requisite high school courses can fulfill those requirements at the AAC.
Instructor, Kathy Brown, seated under the window, has over thirty years of experience in the Math/Science Lab. Over time, she has developed a keen awareness about student difficulties with math and efficient means of their overcoming those difficulties.
