College students who need additional support with reading or writing courses in which they are currently enrolled can drop in to the Urban Des Moines AAC and work with instructors who will help assess academic skill levels and may develop individualized supplemental study programs. Students may also obtain specific instructional support. Any students who have difficulty understanding particular concepts in courses they are taking usually bring their study materials and texts to the Center to work on their difficulties with an AAC instructor. Although instructors are not content experts, this lab offers students instruction in building word and reading comprehension power, as well as gives tips on reading specific textbooks.
Instructors in the Language Arts Lab also work with GED students who are working on the Writing Skills test. They also teach High School students who are enrolled in composition, literature, and drama courses through DMACC or their “home school.”
Instructor and AAC Group Leader, Jon Robinson, above on the left, reviews student work before offering suggestions for improving the effectiveness of a term paper.
