High
School Equivalency (GED)
The Iowa High School Equivalency Diploma is a document that certifies that whoever passes the testing battery has attained the educational level of a high school graduate. It is earned by passing General Education Development (GED) tests. The State of Iowa, through the Department of Education, awards the diploma. Employers, unions, and colleges recognize the GED as the equivalent of a high school diploma. Usually, persons who are 18 years old or older and who have not completed high school are eligible to take the tests and earn this diploma. There are five tests in all:
- Language Arts: Writing
- Social Studies
- Science
- Language Arts: Reading
- Mathematics
The AAC provides preparation for GED testing in each testing area.

Coordinated efforts in the AAC produce more than four hundred GED graduates per year.

High School Completion
Students seeking high school credit for courses approved by their “home” high school counselor or DMACC counselor (for the DMACC diploma) may choose from any of the following core courses and elective courses offered by the AAC. The cost of each course is $100.00 and book costs.
The Urban Des Moines AAC works with the state’s Youth At Risk (YAR) consortium by providing course work to supplement home high school curriculum or the DMACC Diploma as an alternative to students in some parts of the state. To read about YAR, click here.
Certain DMACC Programs of Study may require one or more of the following courses for admission to its program. The courses are offered to Pre-Admissions students at a cost of $30.00 per credit course and book cost.
