Ombudsperson

What is an Ombudsperson?
The campus ombudsperson is an individual employed by the College to work with students and faculty to provide information and support regarding institutional grievance procedures. The ombudsperson seeks to maintain confidentiality, neutrality, and independence to help resolve student concerns and grievances.

Why should I see an Ombudsperson?
Ombudspersons can assist with grade appeals, Petitions for Policy Waiver (request to waive the last day to drop or to appeal refund policy), general complaints about faculty or staff actions and/or discrimination complaints. They are also available to help address questions students or faculty many have about College policies and procedures in general or provide assistance with problem-solving alternatives.

What type of help does an Ombudsperson provide?

  • Serve as a listener who will maintain confidentiality and neutrality
  • Provide information about College policies and procedures
  • Facilitate communication and/or attend meetings to listen to concerns and help parties navigate institutional policies
  • Assist student with problem-solving alternatives

What can an ombudsperson NOT do:

  • Provide legal advice or render judgments
  • Make decisions on complaints
  • Represent students or faculty in formal hearings
  • Act as an advocate for either side of a grievance

What should I do in preparation for my meeting with an Ombudsperson?

  • Gather relevant information regarding the issue or complaint (course syllabus, class schedule, billing documentation, emails or other correspondence, etc.)
  • Review the DMACC Student Handbook, College Catalog, or DMACC website for relevant institutional policies.
