Strong reading skills are important in this program. Textbooks are written at approximately the twelfth grade level. Tests are based on a combination of textbook information and lectures.

In addition to their texts, students will also read related trade publications, which they will also need to use later in then workplace.

Communication Skills (COM 703) is a program requirement. Other related speaking activities may include small group presentations and some public speaking. In the workplace, small group presentations are often a part of the job.

In their courses, students need to have the appropriate writing skills to be able to respond to a number of essay questions and assignments. On the job, they may  be required to write memos, reports, and fill out a variety of forms.

A strong basic math background is essential for success in this program. Both Applied Math (MAT 772) and Applied Math II (MAT 773) are program requirements. Knowledge of measurements, dimensions, and elementary statistics are activities that are integrated into the program. A mechanical aptitude is also extremely important. All of these skills are used in the workplace.

Problem-solving skills are crucial to success in this program. Ability to analyze and to interpret charts and graphs is especially important. These skills are also necessary in the workplace.

In the program, students need to have basic word processing skills and learn Computer-Aided Design (CAD). These skills are also frequently utilized in the workplace.
