DMACC Photography Classes

DMACC offers the following courses at the Ankeny campus. All classes require an SLR camera capable of changing lenses. Class times and registration information are available here.

All digital classes assume you know how to perform the following functions on a computer: Navigate folder structures. Create, name, move, and delete files and folders. We will teach you Photoshop and the other software needed for the class.

ART 184, Principles of Photography - Film

Students will learn the basic principles of photography. Topics will include basic camera operation, film developing, darkroom techniques and special effects. The camera will become an instrument to explore and communicate ideas, goals, and visions effectively. SLR Film camera with lens and total manual function is required.

ART 185, Advanced Photography - Film

For students who have mastered the basic photographic principles and processes. Topics will include photographic lighting and filtration, photojournalism, documentary photography, advanced darkroom techniques, print finishing, and display.

Art 186, Principles of Digital Photography - Digital

Students will learn the basic principles of digital photography. Topics will include basic camera operation, composition, metering, computer tips and tricks, and shooting tips and tricks. The digital camera in conjunction with the computer will become instruments to explore visual communication effectively. This course requires an SLR digital camera, minimum 5.0 megapixel, capable of interchangeable lenses.

Art 225, Photoshop for Photography - Film or Digital

Whether you shoot film or digital, this hands-on course teaches you everything you need to know to scan, process, manipulate and print high-quality photographs digitally from Adobe Photoshop, the industry-standard software for the digital darkroom.

Art 291, Travel Photography - Film or Digital

Advanced principles of image making. Printing and presentation will be explored with the spirit and knowledge that is expected to engender an appreciation for photography, travel and the state of Iowa.

Art 292, Studio Photography - Film or Digital

Students learn to arrange and compose a photograph in a deliberate process. Students learn to analyze the elements in a scene, arrange them and use artificial light for the desired effect. Projects test student imagination, creativity, technical skills and willingness to experiment while improving their photographic expertise.

JOU 175, Photojournalism - Film or Digital

Students will learn basic visual and technical aspects of photojournalism, using a digital camera, while photographing a series of general news, feature, performing arts, sports and community events. Students must have a digital camera to use for this course.
