Des Moines Area Community College Land Surveying Program
The construction industry in Iowa and nationally is booming. there is a great need for skilled and licensedland surveyors. The Land Surveying program at Des Moines Area Community College, Boone Campus, will prepare you for this high-skill, high-pay profession.
In 2001 there were approximately 200 licensed land surveyors in the State of Iowa. Of these 200, only 100 are practicing, and half of these are over the age of 50.
Anticipated average starting salaries are $25,000 to $35,000 per year for program graduates.
There is already great demand for licensed land surveyors, and in the coming years there will be an even greater demand.
The Land Surveying program is designed to provide a two-year AAS degree that will provide necessary training for future licensure as a land surveyor in Iowa. The program consists of topics including: field surveying techniques, surveying laws and ethics, Global Positioning Systems, Land Information Systems, safety and drafting. Career opportunities are with consulting firms; construction companies; federal, state, and local government agencies; and large, land-owning companies. Many licensed surveyors own and operate their own surveying firms.
