Qualified General Interpreter Training Program (QGITP) Courses

Iowa Interpreter Program (Iowa Division of Latino Affairs)The Iowa Interpreter Program is for Spanish-English interpreters. Students must apply to both the Iowa Division of Latino Affairs and to DMACC to participate in this program. Scholarships are available from the Iowa Division of Latino Affairs. The DMACC courses approved for the Iowa Interpreter Program can also be applied toward DMACC's Associate of Science degree and Certificate Programs in Interpretation and Translation.

Students accepted into the QGITP must take the following courses: Fall 2006 (the semester runs from August 28-December 15):

• ITR 101: Introduction to Interpretation and Translation. 3 credits. Students have 2 schedules to choose from: Tuesdays from 7:00-10:00 pm (Des Moines, Ankeny, Newton, and other sites across Iowa*), or Saturdays from 8:00-11:30 am in Des Moines.
• ITR 102: Tools for the Interpreter and Translator. 3 credits. Students can either attend this course at the Urban/Des Moines DMACC campus on Saturdays from 12:30-4:00 pm, or they may choose to take the course online over the Internet.**

Spring 2007 (the semester runs from January 8-May 3):

• ITR 111: Fundamentals of Interpretation. 3 credits. This course will be offered on Saturdays from 8:00-11:30 am at Des Moines, Ankeny, Boone, Carroll, Newton, and other sites across Iowa.*
• ITR 120: Ethics for the Interpreter and Translator. 1 credit. This course will be offered on Mondays from 5:30-6:25 pm at Des Moines, Ankeny, Boone, Carroll, Newton, and other sites across Iowa.*
• ITR 805: Generalist I/T Internship. 2 credits. This course will be offered on Tuesdays from 5:30-6:30 pm at Des Moines, Ankeny, Boone, Carroll, Newton, and other sites across Iowa *. Students will also make arrangements to participate in an internship consisting of 60 contact hours throughout the semester.
