What is the difference between Graphic Technologies and Graphic Design programs and which is best for me?

The DMACC Graphic Technologies program is designed to provide instruction that will allow students to enter a variety of fields within the graphic communications industry. Areas include, but not limited to, technical layout and design, digital imaging, digital prepress, and printing. This program is best for students with a mechanical or software application aptitude.

DMACC Graphic Design concentrates instruction in creative design and illustration. This program is best for students who have artistic skills and wish to pursue a career in the creative design.

Do I have to be enrolled in the Graphic Technologies program to take Graphic Technologies classes? Yes and No. There is a major restriction placed on all Graphic Tech courses. You must be an accepted into the Graphic Technologies program pursuing either an AAS degree, Visual Communications diploma, or one of the Graphic Technologies certificates. However, if there is an opening in any Graphic Tech course, you may enroll manually by obtaining the signature of the instructor for that course.
Can I be in the Graphic Technologies program on a part-time basis? It is possible. If your goal however is for an AAS degree or diploma, attending on a full time basis is strongly recommended.

How do I enroll in the Graphic Technologies program? Who can I call for enrollment information?

You must first complete a DMACC application and specify Visual Communications as your major. Contact admissions to get application and financial aid information. You must have a score of 19 or above in reading and math, and a minimum score of 42 in English on the COMPASS test to be accepted into the Visual Communications program. Once you have applied to the program, you will receive a letter from a student advisor instructing you on the next steps towards enrollment. Once you complete all three terms of the Visual Communicaitons Diploma, you can enroll into the Graphic Technologies program.
What type of facilities, hardware, and software do you have available for students?

The DMACC Graphic Technologies hosts a variety of labs and lecture rooms to facilitate instruction. This includes a main Macintosh computer lab, PC computer labs, prepress and press lab, and a screen and flexography printing area. All courses are located at the Ankeny campus, Ankeny Iowa. The home to the Graphic Arts program is building 19, though some courses are delivered in building 3W.

What books and materials will I need to be in the Graphic Technologies Program?

In addition to text books, you will need to purchase additional supplies:

Is it necessary to own a computer and graphics applications to be in the Graphic Technologies program No. Computers with graphic applications are provided in all computer related courses. Most assignments and projects should be able to be completed within the designated class time.  However, many courses are web enhanced. Access to an internet connected computer greatly increases productivity and communication between you and your instructor.
What hardware and software should I buy, and where can I get a student discount? Many students enjoy the convenience of owning their own computers so that they can work on projects at home or outside of scheduled class time. As a student, you can obtain educational discounts and payment plans on both Macintosh computers and Adobe applications. For computers, we recommend www.apple.com or the Apple store at Jordan Creek in West Des Moines. You may purchase Adobe applications at a discount at the DMACC bookstore or at www.adobe.com.
What type of jobs have the Graphic Technologies graduates obtained? Graduates of the DMACC Graphic Technologies program are currently employed as graphic designers, prepress & output technicians, digital imaging specialists, press operators, and printing customer service and sales representatives. Some local companies who have hired DMACC Graphic Technologies graduates include; Gannet Regional Toning Center, Gannett Ad Design, Meredith Corporation, Principle Corporation, Pella Industries,  Communication Data Services,  Purcell Printing, The Printers Inc., Acme Printing, The Printing Station, and Sutherland Printing.
What is the graphic communications job market like now? Good News! The Iowa Job Outlook 2008 lists Desktop Publishing Specialists as the 7th top growth occupation with a projected employment of 950. The term “desktop publishing” refers to individuals experienced in layout & design, variable data publishing, database management, and website development. Technology is changing the job requirements and descriptions of graphics and printing. It is predicted that nearly two-thirds of the printing workforce will retire within the next five to then years. Printing companies in Iowa are in need of computer savvy workers knowledgeable in current technologies.
What can I expect to earn as a Graphic Technologies graduate? Most Graphic Technologies graduates with no prior experience start an entry level position at between $20-25 M per year. If the graduate had obtained applicable work experience prior or during college, they earn more. Often this salary will increase dramatically within five years if the graduate shows good work ethics and a willingness to keep learning.
