The Fire Specialist certificate provides basic technical knowledge for people working in the fire protection field.Course work covers the scientific principles that affect fire, its causes and behavior, and the means of minimizing its destructive effects through design, detection, suppression, and prevention.

What Kind of Work Will You Do?
- Maintain fire equipment and stations
- Execute orders from superiors and follow chain-of-command procedures
- Work with members of a medical rescue unit
- Be involved in safety education programs for clients or employees
- Direct fire fighters in the performance of their duties
- Help install and advise customers or employees on the use of new equipment
- Help conduct investigations to determine the causes of fires
- Help set rates for fire insurance companies
- Be organized and be able to do detailed work
- Maintain physical and emotional stamina
- Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
- Work both independently and in cooperation with others
- Possess good hearing, sight, and physical coordination
- Fire Science courses are offered only at night on a two-year cycle
- In large urban fire departments all applicants, regardless of educational background, are required to complete the Fire Academy requirements, pass the merit test, and meet physical requirements
