DMACC Hosts Sampling of Medal Winning Wines
Posted 5/02/08

Imagine casually sampling medal-winning wines during an early summer evening while enjoying food prepared by Iowa Culinary Institute students and listening to live music.  This scenario will become a reality for many Central Iowans from 5 to 7 p.m., Sat., May 31 in the Lakeview Inn in Bldg. #7 on the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) Ankeny Campus.

More than 200 different bottles of wine that were medal winners at the 2007 Mid-American Wine Competition will be served at the 2008 Medal Winning Wine Tasting Event.  In addition to tasting wines from an 11-state Midwest region which garnered a first, second or third place in last year’s Mid-American Wine Competition, attendees will dine on food prepared by Iowa Culinary Institute students while listening to the band Pro Musica.

The cost is $30 with all proceeds going to a DMACC Viticulture and Enology International Internship.

“The proceeds from this event will give DMACC students an opportunity to travel abroad, increase their knowledge of wine making and experience viticulture areas known for their long histories of premium wine production,” said Paul Gospodarczyk, DMACC Enology Program Chairperson. He said a DMACC student is currently in New Zealand assisting in their wine harvest.

Gospodarczyk said the medal-winning wines will be divided into four areas: red wines, white wines, fruit wines and dessert wines and paired with selected foods that go well with these wines.

Another highlight of the evening will be a guided wine tasting with Bob Foster, who is a regular on the U.S. wine judging circuit, founder of the San Diego National Wine Competition and an avid wine writer.

“I think this is a great opportunity to taste outstanding wines produced in the Midwest and to get our students the highest quality training they can find anywhere,” said Gospodarczyk.

This casual event is open to the public, however, reservations are required.  For reservations, call (515) 964-6229 by May 27.
