Swingle Singers at Hoyt Sherman
Posted 4/16/08

Iowa Choral Directors Association (ICDA) and Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) announce the Iowa Two-Year Colleges
Swingle Singers Event to be held on Sunday, April 20 2008 in Hoyt Sherman Place at 1501 Woodland near downtown Des Moines.  The day-long event will conclude with a 7:30 p.m. concert by the world-famous Swingle Singers.  A choir of singers from five Iowa community colleges will sing with The Swingle Singers during one portion of the concert.  All tickets for the concert are $18.00 per person and will be on sale to the general public through Ticketmaster on Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at 10:00 a.m.  All seats are reserved and tickets are non-refundable.

In 1962 when Ward Swingle brought together singers who were studio musicians in Paris and who wanted to do more than sing back-up to big-name singers, he created a new approach to choral music: singing instrumental compositions on nonsense syllables using the parts as they were originally composed.  Swingle added a jazz rhythm section to many of his arrangements and a vocal version of arranged jazz was born.  With the founder still serving as music advisor The Swingle Singers have expanded their repertoire so that it now includes many styles of music including pop. Rock, and show tunes in addition to the type of music for which The Swingle Singers became famous almost instantly.  For more information about The Swingle Singers and to hear examples of their music go to www.swinglesingers.com.

ICDA Two-Year Colleges Repertoire and Standards Chair, Jim Loos, is the coordinator of this event.  For more information contact him at DMACC, where he is Music Program Chair and Choral Conductor, by calling 515.964.6633 or by sending e-mail to jcloos@dmacc.edu.
