DMACC Hosts Seminar on the World of Economics

The Iowa Studies Center at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) is hosting a seminar on The World of Economics to be held Fri., Apr. 18 and Sat., Apr. 19.

“Double Talks—The World in Iowa: Past, Present and Future” will focus on topics such as politics, art, culture, sports and urbanization in a series of presentations to be held on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings from October 2007 through April 2008.

The tenth and final “Double Talks” event is “The World of Economics:  Energy & Creativity Despite the Great Depression” to be held from noon to 1:30 p.m., Fri., Apr. 18 in the Bldg. #7 Conference Center on the DMACC Ankeny Campus.  A separate event, geared toward researchers and writers, will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, Sat., Apr. 19 at the Iowa Genealogy Society Library in Des Moines.  All events are open to the public.

Iowa Valley Resource Conservation and Development Shambaugh Committee Project Manager Dr. Peter Hoehnle wil speak on “The Amana People:  The History of a Religious Community.”Ball State University Professor Emeritus and Center for Middletown Studies Founding Director Dr. Dwight Hoover will speak on “A Good Day’s Work: An Iowa Farm in the Great Depression.”

The events are free, although registration is required.  To register, please contact Dr. Lisa Ossian at (515) 964-6568 or llossian@dmacc.edu. A lunch is available on Friday afternoons for $8. The Speaker’s Series and Teacher’s Seminars are sponsored by grants from Humanities Iowa and the State Historical Society, Inc.
