DMACC Hosts Seminar on the World of Justice

The Iowa Studies Center at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) is hosting a seminar on The World of Justice to be held Fri., Jan. 25 and Sat., Jan. 26.

“Double Talks—The World in Iowa: Past, Present and Future” will focus on topics such as politics, art, culture, sports and urbanization in a series of presentations to be held on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings from October 2007 through April 2008.

The sixth “Double Talks” event is “The World of Justice:  Murder & Mayhem Within Iowa’s Crimes” to be held from noon to 1:30 p.m., Fri., Jan. 25.  A separate event, geared toward high school and college instructors, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, Sat., Jan. 26.  Both “Double Talk” events will be held in the Bldg. #7 Conference Center on the DMACC Ankeny Campus.  All events are open to the public.

Des Moines Police Chief Judy Bradshaw will introduce the speakers.  University of North Carolina Law School Faculty Patricia Bryan and Thomas Wolf will speak on “Midnight Assassin:  A Murder in America’s Heartland.”  Historian Dr. Edgar Epperly and Filmmakers Kelly Rundle and Tammy Rundle will speak on “Villisca:  Living with a Mystery.”

At the Saturday session, University of North Dakota History Professor Dr. Kimberly Porter, who is also editor of the Oral History Review, will be conducting a seminar on oral history projects for classroom and community projects.

The Speaker’s Series and Teacher’s Seminars are sponsored by grants from Humanities Iowa and the State Historical Society, Inc.
