Language Proficiency

A TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 173 (computer) or 500 (paper) or 61 (internet), or the successful completion of DMACC English as a Second Language (E.S.L.) Compass Test is required for admission to a degree/diploma program of study at DMACC. Applicants who cannot show proficiency at the required level MAY be admitted to the English as a Second Language (E.S.L.) program.

E.S.L. is a full-time non-credit program offered through the Urban Campus in Des Moines. Admission to E.S.L. is usually for a maximum of one (1) year. Applicants in the E.S.L. program may be admitted to their degree/diploma program when able to demonstrate the required level of English proficiency.

Applicants who have scores near, but still below the minimum requirements MAY be allowed to enroll in credit "Adaptor" classes. These classes will help prepare the student to function better in regular college credit classes, but cannot be used to meet degree requirements or to transfer to other colleges.
