Instructor and Program Chair Bill George
William M. George Bill George was born in Ft. Dodge, Iowa and was raised on a small farm just east of Otho, Iowa. His father was a firm believer in the importance of both the skilled trades and higher education. Bill started his work career as an aircraft electrician in the Air Force in the 1960's. He later worked as a Journeyman Industrial Electrician. Interest in the refrigeration field developed by helping troubleshoot systems during the repair of industrial process chillers. After formal studies in refrigeration, heating and air conditioning he started his own residential service business in Ft. Dodge, Iowa A move to Des Moines, Iowa enabled Bill to work in the commercial HVAC-R field for the next 23 years. The last six years of employment were spent primarily working with building temperature controls related to commercial buildings. In addition to being a Journeyman Refrigeration pipefitter, he is also a Master Electrician. One of Bill's hobbies was building and using computers, this enabled an easy transition to computer operated control systems for temperature control. Mr. George has been teaching at Des Moines Area Community College since 1995. During his tenure the Program was updated and expanded to a new two year AAS degree. The curriculum now incorporates computers and other current technology. The changes extend to both the residential and commercial sides of the heating, air conditioning and refrigeration trade. Bill is married and the father of two sons. Both are employed in the pipefitting and refrigeration trades. After 12 years of service to DMACC, Professor George Retired in December of 2007, Mr. J. Darling was hired as his replacement. |
