Job Description: ALMACO DRAFTER

Prepares mechanical product drawings, electrical schematics, hydraulic schematics, instructions, material lists and operator manuals for use in building and operating ALMACO agricultural research equipment. Provides drafting support, BOM support, Decal creation and printing, CNC plasma tool paths and technical assistance to engineers and manufacturing personnel to continuously improve ALMACO products and services.

Drafting:

Receives work assignments from an assigned engineer or Documentation Coordinator or Production Supervisor.

Reviews engineering drawings and plans and discusses design objectives with engineer.

Recognizes design concerns, alerts engineer and offers solutions as appropriate.

Performs mechanical drafting from engineers’ sketches or verbal instructions.

Prepares assembly and detail drawings for new or existing products according to company standards.

Uses CAD (computer aided drafting) technology.

Uses FASTCAD (computer software) for preparing new and updating existing prints and drawings.

Uses SOLIDWORKS (computer software) for preparing new and updating existing prints and drawings.

Uses CorelDRAW (computer software) to create decals needed Uses Roland printer to manufacture decals Backs up own computer files according to procedures.

Calculates dimensions and applies mechanical principles, formulas and charts.

Maintains engineering records, drawings, prints, numbering systems and material lists.

Works with manufacturing area employees to transfer design requirements to the production of quality products.

Provides support to manufacturing on plasma programming needs and jobs Provides support for BOM development and maintenance Explains drawings and assembly instructions to production employees.

Clarifies standards, tolerances, procedures and dimensions to production employees.

May direct work of pool drafters or less experienced drafters and technicians.

Trains new drafting personnel.

Product Development and Design:

Assists an engineer in the documentation of new and modified research equipment.

Sketches rough layouts of proposed machinery and equipment parts.

Collaborates with engineers, customers and sales to discuss, understand and develop workable designs and alternatives.

Documentation:

Prepares specifications and product structure lists under engineering supervision.

Writes, edits and maintains ALMACO operator manuals.

Develops Bill Of Material for a product as assigned.

Related Responsibilities:

Reads relevant trade journals and manuals to upgrade knowledge.

Attends training to improve knowledge and skills.

Develops and recommends new and innovative methods and processes.

Attends, participates and leads meetings as required.

Follows ALMACO’s product quality, safety and housekeeping policies and maintains standards.

Reports unsolved problems to the Documentation Manager or assigned supervisor.

Represents ALMACO to customers and others through respectful, informative and courteous interactions and appropriate demeanor and appearance.

Reports to work on time and regularly and sets the dependability standard for other employees to follow.

 

 

Qualifications: Requirements:

Post high school education and training in mechanical drafting and one year of successful work experience with drafting electro-mechanical parts, equipment and devices required OR a combination of education, training and relevant experience that provides the required knowledge and skills to perform the above responsibilities.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of electro-mechanical systems.

Ability to read and interpret schematics, prints, mechanical drawings, and written technical information.

Good communication skills to discuss and explain technical information with manufacturing employees and engineers.

Attention to detail, accuracy and thoroughness.

Knowledge of mechanical principles, terminology, safety requirements and practices.

Good mathematical skills required.

Very good knowledge of and skills to use computer-aided drafting and design applications.

Proficient use of computer keyboard required.

Good knowledge of and skill to use PC with word-processing, chart production, database and spreadsheet applications.

Knowledge of all relevant safety policies, rules and practices.

Adequate vision required to see computer screen and written documents and read scales.

Willingness to commit to regular attendance.

Willingness to follow, support and promote all ALMACO policies, procedures and practices.

Willingness to respond rapidly to changing priorities and work assignments.

Ability to set priorities, manage time, schedule work and meet deadlines.

Knowledge of ALMACO product designs and structures, standards, assembly procedures, product functions and purposes and customer requirements must be attained within first year of employment at ALMACO as a drafter.

Physical abilities

Ability to operate a computer keyboard and mouse for 8 hours per day Ability to move around equipment in the shop to gather measurements needed for documentation Ability to operate finished product for an understanding to base operating instructions on Ability to remain seated for 8 hours a day Ability to lift 50 pounds on rare occasions
