Flier
Project
A flier
is a short piece of business or technical writing (usually one page or two
pages (front and back on one piece of paper) that is often times used for
advertising purposes. According to Gerson and Gerson in Technical Writing: Process and Product, “fliers
are cost effective because they can be produced in-house, are time efficient
because they can be created in only a few hours, are responsive to immediate
needs because different fliers can be created for different audiences and
purposes at a moment’s notice, and fliers can be personalized – that is created
with a specific market or audience in mind” (245).
Gerson and Gerson make
the following recommendations for constructing a flier:
1.
Keep
the flier short - one page or two pages
(front and back on one piece of paper)
2.
Focus
on one idea, topic, or theme per flier.
3.
Use a
title at the top of your flier to identify this flier’s theme.
4.
Limit
your text. (No more than 100 or so words)
5.
Increase
font size 16 pt font for text, 20 pt font for title)
6.
Use
graphics that emphasize your theme and make your point memorable
7.
Use
color for focus and emphasis (but don’t over use color)
8.
Use
highlighting techniques (bullets, white space, tables, boldface, italics, headings,
subheadings, or columns)
9.
When
appropriate, use a catchy phrase to personify the organization’s primary focus
10.
Recognize
your audience’s needs and show how the services, etc. will benefit them

You can
see a sample flier advertising a Public Radio Station’s Two-Channel Network on
pages 509-10 in our textbook. This flier, however, has more words than most
because it is presenting an expanded definition.
Your
Assignment: I would like you to develop an original flier
for either the DMACC program that you are presently enrolled in or for a course
that you are presently taking. Your audience, in either case, is potential
students for the DMACC program or course. Your purpose is to interest students
in enrolling in the program or in taking the course.
You will need to include the following information: specific information about
program or course content, benefits to the reader for taking this course or
graduating from this program, and cost and registration information.
I expect
the information for this flier to be researched, accurate, and not made up.
