Assignment:    Define and discuss the impact of Internet Crime

Introduction:

This assignment asks you to identify, research, define and discuss the various forms of Internet crime.  Once you have identified the various forms of crime, discuss their impact on E-Commerce.  Evaluate their impact on consumers using E-Commerce for shopping and purchasing, and on businesses trying to sell their products and services online.  Also address how E-commerce businesses and other E-commerce entities are addressing these problems and what the future looks like for these issues.

Issues:

1.    Identify, define and describe at least five forms of Internet related crimes.  Address the following for each crime.

  1. What is the crime?
  2. How does the crime work?
  3. How prevalent is the crime online?  Provide statistics for these crimes and their damages.
  4. Does this crime have an face to face equivalent?  If so, how are they the same and how do they differ?
  5. What impact does the crime have on E-Commerce customers?
  6. What impact does the crime have on E-Commerce businesses?
  7. What impact does the crime have with law enforcement agencies?

2.    Discuss how customers, like yourself are responding to Internet crime within the E-commerce environment.

3.    Discuss how E-Commerce businesses are addressing the issues of Internet crime.

4.    Discuss how Law Enforcement agencies are responding to Internet crime.

5.    Is Internet crime more common or worse than face to face crimes?  Provide statistics for this discussion as well as your own thoughts and arguments.

Grading:

Please keep in mind that there are no right or wrong answers to these questions.  You will be evaluated on how well you state your position, content quality, and the thought processes you display in responding to the questions.  You will also be evaluated on your grammar, punctuation and presentation.  

Objective:

The primary purpose of this activity is to form a basis of understanding of Internet crime.  Primarily to identify the different types of online crime, their impact on customers and businesses.  It is also important to understand the true numbers of Internet crime compared to other criminal activity.  This allows the consumer and the business owner to make well informed decisions on how much time and effort they should expend to combat Internet crime when engaging in E-Commerce.

The second primary purpose of this writing assignment is to enhance your communication skills.  One of the weakest areas exhibited by many of today's workforce is poor communication skills.   This is an opportunity for you to expand your capabilities and improve your writing skills.

TURN IN:

  1. A three-four page paper that addresses the issues identified above.
  2. A webliography that lists your information sources such as, magazines, books, and websites.
