Research Interests (past and present)
- Softshell turtles - (Genus Apalone): This is information on my current research at Iowa State University on the biogeography, molecular evolution, and genetic variation of this and other turtles.
- Hognose snakes - (Genus Heterodon): This is an extension of my masters degree research at the University of Texas at El Paso on the systematics, behavior and biogeography of this snake.
- Field trip to Arizona - This was an EEB (Ecology and Evolutionary Biology) 585 Field trip to Arizona for 8 days. We spent time all over Arizona so there are pictures of a lot of things.
- GIS Project on Hognose snakes - this is a project that I worked on for a Geographical Information Systems (GIS) class to predict the distribution of the Western Hognose Snake (Heterodon nasicus) in Texas. The link is to the finished project (close to being finished) with a downloadable PDF file of the entire report. You can also take a look at the original proposal for the project if you like.
- Hybrid Zones and Hybridization - the question of secondary contact versus primary intergradation
- Temperature Sex Determination in Turtles - This is work that is done in the lab that I worked in.
- Basking Behavior in Turtles -
- Mimicry in Snakes - This is a report that I did a few years ago. It examines the question of why there are mimics in places where there are no models to mimic. This specifically refers to milk snakes (Lampropeltis triangulum) and others that occur in the United States where there are no Coral snakes (Micrurus and Microides).
- Formalin-fixed DNA - Extraction protocols and more
- Parthenogenesis in Whiptail Lizards (Lacertilia: Cnemidophorus) - This is a paper I wrote a while ago regarding the difficulties that parthenoforms (all female species) present in systematics.
