Course Description and Objectives
An introduction to the mechanics of word order and sentence patterns of English writing skills designed to meet the needs of ESL students preparing to take basic writing.
By the end of the semester, you will have learned sentence types, sentence patterns, and some basic structures, such as those for descriptions, generalizing, and sentence efficiency.
Class Format and Requirements
1. Writing Assignments – Six essays with drafts (double spaced, one page) -- See the free-writing topics on the second page of each chapter. You need to revise your essays at least once. The final copies of your writing assignments must be typed.
2. In-class writing - You will have frequent exercises in the class. Please label each piece in terms of the date it is written, and keep all the pieces of in-class writing in your folder. You needn't revise or type them after class.
3. Writing Conference
You will have a one-on-one writing conference with me twice during the semester. In addition, you are encouraged to visit me during my office hours.
Evaluation and Grading
1. Class Participation (20 %)
You are undoubtedly expected to attend all of our classes and be prepared. A absence is an absence, whatever reason you may have for it. Your being absent in class ten times will make you automatically receive an F.
When evaluating your class performance, I will consider how actively you participate in class activities (discussing, free-writing, and other class activities). So participation means much more than simply being physically in class.
2. Portfolio (60 %)
Six essays (40%); in-class writing (20%). Each essay should meet the format requirements. Being absent in a class meeting, you will lose a certain percentage of points in the section of in-class writing.
Course Policies on late drafts/late essays/missed in-class writing. A late essay will lose one point per calendar-day, and no a-week-late essays will be accepted. In-class writing cannot be made up, since it is usually done after class discussion.
3. Final Exam (20%)
4. Grading scale
A: 90-100; B: 80-89; C: 70-79; D: 60-69; F: 59 or below.
