Dear Students: Please notice!! This is a syllabus from the spring semester 1998. Although this is not the most recent syllabus used in this class, it is a good approximation of what is expected of you in Survey of Physical Science.

WELCOME TO SURVEY OF PHYSICAL SCIENCE!

This is a four credit course which will consume quite a bit of your time. Homework and lab-work require you to devote much time and effort so that you get the good grades that we all know you should have. My best advise is for you to set aside specific times out of your weekly schedule which will be devoted specifically for studying for this class.

A big part of a successful class is communication. Please call me, or let me know if you are having trouble and you need help. My DMACC extension has voice-mail so that you can leave me messages at any time...use it! Feel free to stop me in class and ask questions to clarify any topic of discussion. I think we can have a great semester...I am looking forward to getting to know all of you.

GRADE BREAKDOWN:

EXAMS: 50%

HOMEWORK/IN-CLASS WORK: 25%

LABS: 15%

FINAL: 10%

ESSENTIAL EQUIPMENT:

1. You must have a "good" calculator! I highly recommend the Casio FX-300 as an inexpensive but yet powerful calculator.

2. Graph Paper

HOMEWORK:

Yes, you will have homework! I will be assigning homework about twice a week. Your homework MUST:

* be stapled

* have the problems written neatly, labeled appropriately, and in order!

* have your name and PHYSICS 106 written on the top

* be turned into an appropriate location.

Late homework will have an automatic deduction of 10%-per-day-late. Although you may always ask for help from me, a tutor, or others in the class...you may NOT 'photocopy' other people's assignments. If I find two homework assignments that are identical I will assign grades of 0 (zero) to BOTH papers...don't cheat. As was mentioned, you should feel free to ask questions - at any time - about a homework assignment. If I have already solved a problem once in class I do not want to redo the whole thing over, though.

There will be many in-class assignments and problems that you will do. These cannot be made up if you missed the class.

EXAMS:

You will not have to memorize formulas or constants for any of the exams. All formulas and constants will be supplied on a formula sheet. Since a majority of the points on the exams come from problems, I assign partial credit for each problem. It is very important that you clearly SHOW ALL WORK!!! for every problem on an exam.

If you miss an exam, for any reason, you can take a make-up exam. The make-up exam will be different than the original exam. Make-up exam requests must be submitted in writing at least 24 hours ahead of your requested make-up. All make-up exams will have 10% deducted off of the top of your score.

CHEATING POLICY: If you are caught cheating on an exam you will be given a zero on that exam and from that point on you will receive no partial credit on any problem for the rest of the semester.

LABORATORIES:

There is a required lab manual you must purchase for this course. I will supply you with the laboratory material that you will need. It is important that you are on time to labs because during the first 15 minutes, or so, I am explaining how to do each lab. Please make sure that you put all of your lab partners' names on the material that you turn in. There are two make-up lab days scheduled this semester. These make-up days are intended for those who have missed a lab, not as extra credit. If you have to do a make-up lab, it is likely that it will not be the one that you originally missed. You will have to sign up for a make-up lab period.

Laboratories are always due in the next scheduled laboratory. NOTE: this is not necessarily the next Tuesday, since our exams will always be scheduled on Tuesdays. It is important that you stay caught up on your laboratory reports!

For EACH of your laboratories you must write two things: (1) an error analysis, and (2) a conclusion. These items should be typed. The error analysis and the conclusion are two separate things, not to be included into one big paragraph. Each of these items needs to be at least one solid paragraph long.

At the beginning of each lab you will have a short 5 point oral quiz.

Make-up Lab Day # 1: Thurs. March 19, 1998 For those missing labs 1-5

Make-up Lab Day # 2: Thurs. April 23, 1998 For those missing labs 6-10

FINAL EXAM:

Final exam option #1: Final exam is comprehensive. This exam is also purely multiple choice. You will need to make, and bring, your own formula sheets to the final exam. These formula sheets may include any formula, constant, or written comments you may want to include. These formula sheets MAY NOT have any problem or example written out on them. You will have your formula sheets examined before given the final. The formula sheets which you write for the final exam are due on April 25, 1997.

Final exam option #2: We have a "fun" final!! With this option, we could work in small groups, show demonstrations, make displays about physics, etc. More about this option, later.

NOTES:

The absolute last day to turn in ANY papers this semester is Friday, April 24, 1998. Beyond this date no papers will be accepted. (Except, of course, to recycle!!!)

I do not sign late drop slips - the last day to drop a DMACC course is March 31, 1998.

MAYBE I can find a tutor - paid by DMACC - if you are having difficulty. Let me know when you start having trouble so that we can stay on top of this material.
