Your grade in this class will contain these components:
Quizzes 50% of overall grade
Homework notebooks/In-Class Work /Computer Projects 30% of overall grade
Midterm 10% of overall grade
Final 10% of overall grade
QUIZZES:
Quizzes must be taken on scheduled days (Fridays). However, if there is a more convenient time before 3:00 p.m. that you would like to take the quiz you have the option of arranging this with me prior to the day of the quiz. There will be NO retaking of quizzes. If you miss a quiz there is only a two school day time period in which you can come in and make it up. Beyond the two school day grade period you will be given a zero on the quiz. Of the 14 scheduled quizzes this semester, you may make up 2 quizzes within this two school day window. After the third make-up quiz you will have 20% deducted off the top of any make-up quiz scores.
There are no "chapter exams" for this class.
CHEATING POLICY:
Cheating will not be tolerated. If you are SUSPECTED of cheating on any work, (i.e., exams, quizzes, or homework) you will be given a zero, and NO retake or make-up work allowed. From that point on, you will not be given any partial credit on your work. Cheaters will also be turned over for full college reprimand (i.e., a permanent mark on your transcripts...thrown out of DMACC...etc.)
HOMEWORK NOTEBOOK -- IN-CLASS PROBLEMS:
Almost every day I will give you a few problems to do that night and turn in the next day. I do not know what problems I will assign ahead of time. If you miss class it is your responsibility to find out what problems were assigned so that you can turn them in the next day. I will not answer direct questions over the problems that I assign, however, I will answer similar questions or questions about general principles. These problems must be (1) timely, (2) neatly written out, (3) clearly labeled as to date due, your name, chapter, and problem number. As you can tell, there will be MANY mini-homework assignments. Please feel free to ask questions about the problems out of the sections we cover. Remember: the daily homework problems are simply meant to stimulate the studying process. Along with the daily assigned work, you should always try to do at least the odd problems out of the sections.
You are assigned homework notebooks also. These notebooks are different from the daily work discussed above. For every chapter that we cover, you are assigned to complete the even-numbered miscellaneous problems at the end of the chapters. These are the problems on the blue pages in your book. You should continually work along doing these problems simultaneous with the material we cover in class. When we finish a chapter I will give you about a week or so to finish these problems and turn them in. The specific due dates will be announced in class. The problems in these notebooks need to be clearly labeled, written in assigned order, written neatly, and final answers must be boxed. You must show all work !! These notebooks will be graded for neatness, completeness, as well as correctness. Copying will not be tolerated. There will be a 10% per day late deducted off the top of these notebooks.
Problems will also be given as in-class assignments. These problems cannot be made up. These problems are due the hour they are assigned.
MIDTERM AND FINAL EXAMS:
The mid-term exam will cover the material presented thus far in the semester (i.e., Chapters 1 - 3). The final exam will cover the material presented after the midterm (i.e., Chapters 4 - 6). If anyone is caught cheating on either of these exams they will automatically flunk the entire course. More information about these exams will be given later.
ESSENTIAL EQUIPMENT:
You must have a calculator for this class. A graphing calculator is not absolutely required, although I highly recommend that you have one. I personally prefer the TI85 or the Casio-brand calculators.
It is my policy, however, to NOT allow the TI-92, the TI-89, or the HP-48 brand of calculators in this class. If you have any questions about whether or not your specific calculator is allowed, please contact me. I believe that it is imperative that each of you needs to be able to perform calculus problems without the crutch of such sophisticated calculators. Please bring your book and calculator to class every day. I will be doing problems out of the text, and you need to follow along.
SCHEDULED NO-CLASS DAYS:
Monday, September 4, 2000 and Thursday - Friday, November 23 - 24, 2000. Please note: ISU’s Thanksgiving break does NOT match DMACC’s Thanksgiving break.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
1. I do not sign late drop slips. The last day to drop a DMACC course is November 6, 2000, I do not give incompletes for this course, either.
2. There is an incredible amount of papers and work associated with this course...best get organized!!!
3. Remember the old college rule: for every one hour you spend in class, you should prepare and work three hours outside of class!! Hmmm....since this is a 5 credit course, you should expect to work for 15 hours/week outside of class! But then again, this is calculus, so this should be considered a minimum!!!!
4. The last day you can turn in any papers is Friday, December 1, 2000.
5. DMACC finals are during the week of December 12 - 15, 2000.
