Welcome to Calculus for Business/Social Science!!! We will be covering about 5 chapters from the book, Calculus for Management, Social & Life Sciences, written by Berkey, third edition. This is a four credit, intensive summer course...you should plan right now to devote plenty of time to your studies.
COURSE DESCRIPTION (taken from the DMACC catalog)
MATH 122, Calculus for Business/Social Science
Functions, graphs, differential calculus, integral calculus, introduction to max-min theory for functions of two variables. Emphasis on application of calculus to business problems. Not a substitute for MATH 129 and MATH 130. PREREQUISITES: 2 years HS algebra and MATH 115, or MATH 094 and MATH 115.
Please make sure that your background meets the minimum prerequisites for this course.
GOOD NEWS: No specific homework will be collected/handed in from your book!! HOWEVER: I reserve the right to assign text problems for you to hand in once in a while!
BAD NEWS: We will have in-class quizzes and/or group work for points every night. Expect in-class points to be collected every time that we meet.
The quizzes and the group work will entirely consist of problems similar to the ones from your text and those that we do in class. As long as you stay caught up with the homework, and you make sure that all of your questions are answered...you will be fine.
EXAMS:
At the end of each chapter we will have a 100 point exam. The exams will be at the beginning of the night (6 p.m. - 8 p.m.), and then at 8 p.m. new material will be covered. Please do not discuss the exams amongst yourselves. I must be notified BEFORE the day of the exam if you are unable to take the exam during the assigned time.
PLEASE NOTE: 10% will be deducted off the top of any make-up exam. However, if I am not notified of your exam absence in a timely manner, then 20% will be deducted off the top of your make-up exam score.
There will be NO re-takes of exams or quizzes. I know all of these rules/regulations sound strict, but in a course such as this, discipline is a MUST if you are to survive.
NOTES:
Please bring your book with you to class every class period. We will be doing many of the problems together out of the sections and answering homework problems, so it is helpful for you to know what we are doing!! Class participation is a must!! It is a lot more fun (calculus, fun?!?!!?? Yes!) when we all work together and help each other out.
Once in a while I will be taking this class to a computer laboratory to learn a software package which accompanies this text. The exercises/points that we earn on these nights are NOT points that can be made up. Attendance is a must.
TOPIC: Academic dishonesty, a.k.a. cheating: cheating will not be tolerated. If you are caught cheating, you will be thrown out of the class. Cheating will not be tolerated on exams, quizzes, homework, or anything else! Every semester I catch someone cheating...do not let this be you.
I do not sign late drop slips, the last day to drop a summer course at DMACC is July 12, 2000.
