Bob Foster was the co-founder of the San Diego National Wine Competition and its director for the first five years (1982-1987). For over twenty years he has judged numerous wine competitions including the Riverside International Wine Competition, the West Coast Wine Competition, the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, the Pacific Rim International Wine Competition, the Sonoma County Harvest Fair, the Baja California Wine Competition, the Missouri State Fair, and the Jefferson Cup Competition in Missouri. He is the Director of the Temecula Valley Wine Competition. He is the assistant editor of the California Grapevine wine newsletter and a member of its tasting panel.

In order to be able to buy wine, his day job is a prosecutor for the California Attorney General’s Office in San Diego. In that capacity he has twice argued and won cases at the Supreme Court of the United States.
