Teaching Units—Questions and Answers

1. Why do I have to verify my requests for TI units?

TI unit request forms are supposed to be approved prior to attending a workshop, conference, meeting, etc. Once you have attended, it is important to confirm that you attended the number of hours you requested, or that you attended at all.

2. How do I verify that I attended an event?

If you received a certificate, have a copy of the schedule of sessions, a copy of your registration, etc., you can send a copy to HR. Otherwise, you can e-mail and confirm the number of hours, etc.

3. How do I know what counts and what doesn’t?

The Faculty Development Committee has worked hard on developing a list of activities under each of the seven competencies. There may be maximums on some activities—the list is a work in progress, and we will send updates to all faculty from time to time.

4. Do adjunct faculty have to accrue TI units?

Adjunct faculty is encouraged to participate in professional development events, however, at this point, it is not a requirement. Our long-term goal is to have training opportunities available to adjuncts, but issues related to timing and financial resources have to be worked out.

5. Why aren’t more workshops offered at the outlying campuses?

We are attempting to offer more at the campuses. Sometimes a speaker is unable to travel to the other campuses, the ICN may not be available, or timing makes it difficult. However, we will try to tape certain sessions and use the ICN more. In addition, faculty can request through their dean that a particular workshop or technical training be offered at their campus at a specified time. We’ll try to make that happen.

6. Can I get a copy of my record of TI units?

Yes, faculty may access a report of TI units at Teacher Improvement Status Report. Contact Kim Lacey at extension 6439 or Margi Boord at extension 6256 in HR with any other questions.

7. Is it the total number of TI units that matter, or are we required to have a minimum number in each category?

The total number is most important, and there is no minimum number of TI units required for any of the competencies with the following exception. If you are a new faculty who has not taught before, half of your total units must be in competencies 2, 3, 4, and 5. It is recommended that faculty try to earn TI units in all competencies, but it is not required. There is an upper limit of 20 units on each of competencies 6 and 7. If you have reached that limit, you must earn the remainder of your units in the other competencies.
