Check-All Valve Company Has Success With Lean

After taking classes from the DBR Lean Training Staff, Check-All Valve has begun its journey of continuous  improvement. The Company began slowly with some of the management team attending  a basic Lean 101  course. The company then consulted with DBR to put a plan in place for all employees to attend at least the basic course. All 33 employees were able to attend and some attended advanced courses such as Value Stream Mapping (VSM) and Visual Workplace (5S) classes.

After starting to implement the concepts learned in the classroom, the company has been able to accomplish the following:

  • Reduced overall inventory by approximately 40 percent.

  • Began other small projects, which led to a 5S Red Tag clean-up area and better workplace organization.

  • Used the success from the small projects to begin a major improvement in workplace organization and continuous flow of product through the plant.

  • Freed up operating floor space, which has allowed for product, diversification and the ability to produce a new customers valve line. This will lead to larger production volumes than they normally produced in the past.

  • There are 4 active Continuous Improvement Lean teams now functioning.

  • Employees are all using the Lean Philosophy and Terminology, as they plan and do the work they are responsible for, on a daily basis.

  • Build to order product delivery time has been reduced by one-production day.

DMACC Continues to Help Companies With the IWE

The Iowa Waste Exchange (IWE) completed another successful year serving Iowa businesses interested in saving money while increasing recycling. In the past fiscal year (July 1, 2004 to June 30, 2005), the IWE program found alternative uses for nearly 466 materials. By diverting more than 74,450 tons of material from disposal, the IWE saved businesses $2.5 million in avoided disposal costs.

The IWE mission is to provide Iowa industries with smart waste management alternatives and business assistance services that result in both economic and environmental benefits, including waste reduction from Iowa landfills.

The Iowa Waste Exchange is a cooperative effort with Iowa's Community Colleges.

Contact Dennis at dahayworth@dmacc.edu to find out how your company can reduce waste and conserve landfill space.
