DBR Helps Solve Company's Waste Problem

Bill Olson with Ralph Smith Inc., a floor materials distribution center, was cleaning up a warehouse.  During the process he found that they had accumulated small lots of miscellaneous floor adhesives.  The material was still able to be used but their customers usually ordered larger quantities.  While they were checking into disposal options, Metro Waste Authority RCC referred them to The Iowa Waste Exchange at DMACC.  Dennis Hayworth, the area resource specialist for Area E, discussed the disposal options with Bill.  Dennis suggested that the materials might be able to be used by the Restore in Des Moines or the Home Recycling Exchange.  Both of these organizations provided building materials to low income people for home improvement projects.

Home Recycling Exchange was able to find some clients that could use two pallets of the adhesive. Ralph Smith Inc. saved disposal costs, hauling cost and freed up warehouse space. Home Recycling Exchange was able to provide their clients with low cost adhesives.  Two tons of materials were used as intended and a disposal issue avoided.

Hospitals and Government Agencies Adopt Lean Operations

Open the link below and read a Des Moines Register article about Leaning Public Institutions. Among other interesting facts are that "Business efficiency experts assert that up to 35 percent of the average employee's time is wasted on inefficient procedures. In health care, that number jumps to 60 percent."
