Basic
Motorcycle Safety Rider Course
The MSF Basic Rider Course is based on years of scientific
research and field experience which has successfully trained
over 2 million participants to date. It teaches fundamental
skills. It provides basic entry-level skills for
a new rider to begin practicing and developing the mental and
motor skills important for safe street operation. It is not
intended to produce the superb riding skills of an experienced
rider.
The Basic Rider course is a combination of classroom and on-motorcycle
instruction. The cost for the courses is as follows : Motorcycle
Rider $130; Moped $40; Experienced Rider $60
- Classroom instruction:
approximately 5 hours. A participant handbook
is provided for the classroom portion of the curriculum
and 11 training aids are usd to enhance learning.
- On-motorcycle instruction:
10 hours. Includes 17 on-motorcycle exercises.
- Evaluation for the Basic Rider
Course consists of a written, multiple-choice knowledge
test and an end-of-course skill test.
- DMACC administers the basic rider course for the State of Iowa, upon
completion of the course, students will be required to take the DOT
written test at the Drivers License Station. Upon completion of the
course, skill test may be waived.

Experienced
Motorcycle Safety Rider Course
The MSF Experienced Rider Course is designed to provide
a safe, effective, and enjoyable training event for
participants. It is intended to facilitate the development
of riders within each excercise and throughout the
course. Participants should have sucessfully completed
the MSF Basic Rider Course or equivalent, or have sufficient
riding skills and experiences to operate a motorcycle
with basic proficiency.
On-Motorcycle
Instruction: 5 hours
- Participants must provide their
own Motorcycles.
- Must have proof
of Motorcycle license and insurance.
- Participants must wear
proper rider gear that minimally includes:
a helmet manufactured to meet DOT standards,
eye protection, long-sleeved shirt or jacket,
sturdy trousers or jeans, full-fingered gloves,
and over the ankle footwear.

Moped
Rider
Learn how to operate and care for moped and rights and responsibilities
as moped operator. Must be 13 years or older to take this
course.
