This Tech Prep program provides students with the basics of welding, automation, machining tool operation (CNC), computer-aided drafting and design (CAD), and other workplace skills. Two years of this program are available on an alternating schedule. A total of 24 DMACC credits are available upon completion of all DMACC Career Academy course offerings.

    M-F 12:30-2:30pm;
  • Ames Career Academy/Hunziker Center
    M-F 7:50-9:50am or 12:50-2:50pm;
  • DMACC Newton Campus
    M-F 1:00-3:00pm (Year 1 only)

Alternate 1
MFG 250 Engine Lathe Theory – 1 credit
An introductory level course explaining the theory of the basic operation and care of an engine lathe.
MFG 251 Engine Lathe Operations Lab – 2 credits
An introductory level course for the metal cutting lathe. During this course students will become familiar with the basic setups as well as safe operation and care of a lathe in a lab environment.
MFG 260 Mill Operations Theory – 1 credits
An introductory level course explaining the theory of the basic operation and care of vertical milling machines.
MFG 261 Mill Operations Lab I – 2 credits
An introductory level course for the vertical mill. During this course students will become familiar with basic setups as well as safe operation and care of a milling machine in a lab environment.
MFG 105 Machine Shop Measuring – 3 credits
A study of measurements as used in industry. Units of instruction include tools, gauges, comparators, gauge blocks, and inspection practices.
CAD 240 Applied Materials & Processes – 3 credits
Standard industrial raw materials and forming processes will be examined. Students will see various machining, forming and welding operations. Field trips to industry will be offered.

MFG 276 Hand/Bench Machine Tools – 1 credits
Machine shop procedures including shop safety, hand tools, layout, and tool grinding. Operations on drill presses, pedestal grinders and sawing machines.
MFG 121 Machine Trade Print Reading I – 2 credits
A beginning and intermediate blueprint reading course covering basic visualization of shapes and sizes, and freehand sketching of objects. Includes section lining, print alterations and projections.
MFG 330 CNC Mill Operations – 1 credits
An introductory level course explaining the theory behind the basic operation and programming of a CNC vertical machining center. Corequisite: MFG331
MFG 331 CNC Mill Operations Lab – 2 credits
An introductory level course for programming and operating a CNC milling center in a lab environment. Corequisite: MFG330
MFG 350 CNC Lathe Operations – 1 credits
An introductory level course explaining the theory behind the basic operation and programming of a CNC lathe. Corequisite: MFG351
MFG 351 CNC Lathe Operations Lab – 2 credits
An introductory level course for programming and operating a CNC lathe in a lab environment.
CAD 139 Intro to CAD/CAM – 3 credits
The objectives of this course will apply computer aided design software and computer aided manufacturing software for numerically controlled (CNC) machine tools.
