Building Trades/Finish Carpentry Career Academy

This Tech Prep program allows students to engage in experiential learning in the areas of construction and carpentry.  A total of 21 DMACC credits are available upon completion of all DMACC Career Academy course offerings.  Transportation to the job site is required.

Building Trades/Finish Carpentry Career Academy

What kind of work will this prepare me to do in the future?
  • Measure and cut materials to proper size and place them
  • Construct the wooden framework of building and install molding, wood paneling, and cabinets
  • Install windows, door frames, doors, stairs
  • Be concerned with the appearance as well as the accuracy of work
  • May build forms needed for concrete slabs, steps, piers, and walls
  • Use tools, including hammers, saws, chisels, and planes, portable saws, drills and power nailers
  • May prefer to specialize in rough work, trim work, or cabinet making
  • May do concrete flatwork
What other courses should I take while in high school to prepare me for this career?
Applied Math, Geometry, Drafting, Industrial Arts, Woods.
 
DMACC credits you can earn while in high school:
Year One Classes
CON 333 Materials/Construction Theory – 5 credits
An introduction to the materials used in the construction industry and the methods involved in the application of these building materials.
CON 336 Care/Use Hand/Power Tools – 1 credits
Proper care, use and selection of hand and power tools with an emphasis on maintenance and safety.
CON 337 Construction Blueprint Reading – 1 credits
Fundamentals of blueprint reading designed to allow the student to translate plans into practical job experience.
CON 346 CON 346 - Concrete Systems & Forming – 4 credits
An introduction to concrete as a material and to concrete design, placement and finish. Identification and application to forming systems will be studied in the classroom and applied in the lab. Prerequisite: CON 336
CON 338 Materials Takeoff – 1 credit
A study of the techniques needed to create a materials list by reading a blueprint.
Prerequisite: CON 337 should be taken concurrently with or prior to course
Year Two Classes
CON 341 Construction Drafting & Design - 2 credits
An introduction to the fundamentals of design and basic drafting methods. Includes the preparation of the blueprint used to construct the student-built project. Prerequisite: CON 337
CON 334 Construction Techniques – 7 credits
A practical hands-on introductory experience that covers the construction process including rough and finish carpentry.
