CONSTITUTION DAY AT DMACC

DMACC Ankeny Campus second year student Christine Etima of Adel takes part in the “open mic soap box” speeches held on Constitution Day at the DMACC Ankeny Campus.  Etima, who is enrolled in DMACC’s Dental Assistant program, spoke on the topic of freedom of speech.  Etima is originally from Uganda.  Constitution Day events, including debates on First Amendment issues, banned book displays and other presentations, were held on all DMACC campuses.

Frank Cordaro from the Catholic Worker House in Des Moines spoke on the “Separation of Church and State:  A Catholic Worker’s Perspective” during the Constitution Day activities on the DMACC Urban Campus.
Thomas Jefferson impersonator Steven Edenbo speaks to students and staff as part of Constitution Day events at the DMACC West Campus. He remained in character as Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence, throughout his presentation at the West Campus, as well as two performances at the DMACC Boone Campus.   

TERRORISM ANALYST SPEAKS AT DMACC

Peter Bergen, a CNN terrorism analyst, author and producer who has personally interviewed Osama bin Laden, speaks on the topic “Six Years After 9/11:  Are We Winning the War on Terrorism?” in a presentation on the DMACC Ankeny Campus. Bergen outlined seven reasons why he thinks al-Qaida is recovering.  However, he said he is skeptical that al-Qaida will attack in the U.S. within the next five years and he does not expect al-Qaida to use nuclear weapons anytime soon.  He also said despite the $50 million reward for bin Laden, he said he does not expect bin Laden to be found within the next five years.  More than 225 people attended the hour and a half long speech.  Bergen signed copies of one of his books following the speech.

QWL BREAKFAST
Move over CSI Miami--DMACC’s right on your heels.  Quality Work Life (QWL) is sponsoring a fun breakfast presentation by Larry Naber and Cathy Ockenfels, the chair and past chair of the Criminal Justice Program.  They will speak from 7:30 a.m. to approximately 8:45 a.m., Fri., Sept. 28th in the Oak/Maple Room in Bldg. #7 on the  Ankeny Campus.  The Criminal Justice Program is growing in many different directions from Computer Forensics to the Career Academy programs for high school students.  Learn about the many new initiatives and about the faculty who bring interesting backgrounds in local, state and federal criminal justice.

The Criminal Justice Program at DMACC collaborates with law enforcement agencies so DMACC students receive the best-rounded education.  Hear about how they do it.  Please register by Thur., Sept. 27th by calling the Professional Development Registration Line at 965-7045.  A continental breakfast will be provided along with a surprise token from the Criminal Justice department.


WALKING/BIKE TRAIL DEDICATION

The dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony for the newly completed DMACC Ankeny Campus walking/bike trail was held Sept. 13.  Scores of contributors to the walking/bike trail were given a pair of scissors and asked to help cut a ribbon while standing on the new trail.  Some of those in attendance included:  DMACC Foundation Executive Director Ganesh Ganpat (left to right); Special Funds Accountant Darwin Schmig, who was the largest single donor to the project; Student/Alumni Activities Coordinator Mary Lonsdale; DMACC Physical Plant Director Mark Baethke; Cheryl Spencer from the Foundation Office; Polk County Supervisor E.J. Giovannetti; DMACC President Rob Denson and his wife Pat Denson.

DMACC INTERNATIONAL YEAR EVENT

Sandra Sanchez (left), immigrants voice program director for the American friends service committee and Alejandro Orozco (right), network against human trafficking founder and executive director speak on "The World of Immigrants:  No Human Being Is Illegal, Right?” during a panel discussion moderated by Iowa Civil Rights Commission Executive Director Ralph Rosenberg (center).  The event, held on the DMACC Ankeny Campus, was the inaugural event of DMACC’s 2007-08 international year activities, which focuses on “The World in Iowa…Past, Present and Future.”


DMACC AND RADIO CITY ROCKETTES SPONSOR COAT DRIVE

DMACC President Rob Denson (center) and two members of the Radio City Rockettes film a T.V. commercial for a Winter Warmth Coat Drive sponsored by DMACC, KCWI 23 and the Radio City Rockettes. New or slightly used coats are needed to help keep central Iowans warm this winter.  The coat drive runs through Oct. 26.  Drop off sites are located at each of the DMACC campuses, as well as at the Hunziker Center in Ames, the Civic Center and KCWI 23 T.V. in Ankeny.  DMACC Phi Theta Kappa members are assisting with the drive and conducting a mitten, hat and glove drive.  


DMACC VET TECH STUDENT HAVE A FUNDRAISER

KITE FESTIVAL ON THE CARROLL CAMPUS
The DMACC Carroll Campus invites area families to participate in the first annual DMACC Kite Festival.  The Kites Over DMACC kite festival will be held from noon to 3 p.m., Sun., Sept. 30 on the DMACC Carroll Campus. A kite-building workshop will also be held starting at noon on the Carroll Campus.  The kite-flying workshop will focus on building a simple kite for young flyers.  The kite kits cost $3 each and include everything you need to fly a kite, except for a gusty breeze.  The kite kits are free if you donate a new or clean slightly used coat to the DMACC/KCWI23 Winter Warmth Coat Drive.

The general public is encouraged to fly their own kites or bring a lawn chair and enjoy the festivities.  There will also be a free ice cream social for the first 200 people.

PIONEERS CONNECTION
The next DMACC Pioneers meeting will be at 11:30 a.m., Mon., Oct. 8 in the Oak/Maple Rooms in Bldg. #7 on the Ankeny Campus.  The program will feature the Ray Society from Drake University and DMACC Foundation Executive Director Ganesh Ganpat will talk about the DMACC Foundation.  To make a reservation, call 964-6868 before 4:30 p.m., Thur., Oct. 4.  

The Pioneers garage sale was a great success this fall. Profits from the sale will go towards DMACC student assistance and/or student scholarships. We would like to recognize several DMACC staff and community people who are due a "thank you for your time and
service:"

--
All of the Pioneers who volunteered many hours of work in preparation, setup and selling of  the donated items. 

--The Physical Plant, Brad Butler and staff of furniture movers, who moved a fully loaded truck of donated goods to the sales room in Bldg. #13 on a very hot and humid day.

--Security Officer Randal Langford who provided the portable road sign stands and store our signs every year. 

--The Automotive Building staff and faculty who arranged for the auto lab to be available for the sale during the week before classes started.  A special “thank you” to Randy Voshell for help with the set-up and moving of many heavy tables.

--Sharon Eckstrom, President of the Pioneers, for her guidance and many hours of work with the project.

--Larry & Connie Birdsall, Harlan & Barbara Giese, Tom & Carolyn Hildreth and Al Wyckhoff for their many hours to pick-up donations.

--Dee Johnson, Commercial Art (retired/adjunct) instructor for the creative garage sale signs and the extra effort to complete the task on short notice.

--DMACC faculty ,staff and community friends who donated lots and lots of items to the sale. Without these donated items, it would not have been possible to raise the $4,000 for DMACC student assistance and scholarships.
