DMACC HOSTS
U.S. SENATE AG HEARING

U.S. Senators Chuck Grassley (left to
right) (R-IA), Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) and Tom Harkin

Forestry held July 24 in the DMACC Ankeny Campus Bldg. #6 Auditorium.
This is the fourth of eight scheduled hearings nationwide leading to the
formation of the next farm bill. They heard comments from three
panels of agricultural leaders and farmers from the Midwest.
HARKIN & BOSWELL SPEAK AT DMACC ANKENY
CAMPUS

U.S. Senator Tom Harkin (left) (D-IA) and
U.S. Congressman Leonard Boswell (D-IA) speak about the embryonic stem
cell research bill at a news conference held in Bldg. #7 on the DMACC
Ankeny Campus, Mon., July 24. The bill was approved by the
U.S. Senate on Tuesday and then vetoed by President Bush the following
day. Both Harkin and Boswell indicated they will reintroduce this
bill in the Senate and House, respectively, next year.
COMMUNITY COLLEGE GOURMET BUFFET

Former Iowa Governor Terry Branstad (left)
visits with DMACC President Rob Denson at the Community College Gourmet
Buffet for the Republican Party. A similar event for the Democratic
Party will be held in September. Branstad and U.S. Congressional
Candidate Jeff Lamberti delivered the keynote addresses at the event.
The gourmet buffet was prepared by Iowa Culinary Institute students.
DEDICATION AT MITCHELLVILLE

DMACC Learning
Center was dedicated at a special ceremony at the institution.
NELSON RECEIVES AWARD
Ankeny Campus Biology
Instructor Gary Nelson has been named the winner of the 2006 Lawrence and
Eula Hagie Heritage Award. Gary's accomplishments include founding and
advising DMACC's award-winning Environmental Conservation Club, helping
reconstruct a campus prairie, helping preserve Carney Marsh and inspiring
countless students during his 31 years at DMACC. There will be an
award celebration for Gary Fri., Aug. 11 starting at 6 p.m. at the new
gazebo by the DMACC lake. Food and beverages will be provided.

TECH CAMP

Michaela
Funke (left) and Morgan Shickell, both of Nevada, work with a speech
recognition computer software package during the 2006 Tech Camp held at
the Boone Campus. A total of 20 students who will be entering the fifth,
sixth or seventh grades attended the Tech Camp. Funke is 11 and will be a
sixth grader this fall. Shickell is 12 and will be a seventh grader.
VOLLEYBALL CAMP
Maggie Anderson of Lohrville readies herself
for a return at a volleyball camp held on the Boone Campus. Anderson, 9,
who will be a fourth grader, attended the three-day camp receiving
instruction on hitting, setting, passing, serving, offense and defense
from DMACC Head Volleyball Coach Patty Harrison and members of the DMACC
volleyball team.
HEALTH CAMP

Mackenzie Smith, 13, of Johnston (left to right), Catherine DeFino, 12, of
Ankeny and Laquetta Mahoney, 13, of Des Moines examine a cow’s heart at
the Health Survivor Camp Wed., July 12. Twelve middle-school aged
students attended the week-long camp to learn about a variety of
health-related careers including dental assisting, nursing and medical lab
technician. The students participated in “Survivor challenges” during 26
hands-on activities.
SWALLA SIGNS LETTER OF INTENT TO PLAY AT
DMACC
Rebecca Swalla, a 5’7” player from South Hamilton High School in Jewell,
has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball for DMACC.
Swalla averaged 18 points, five rebounds and three assists per game for
the Hawkettes under Coach Kathi Fisher last year. Swalla had a season
high of 32 points against B-C-L-U-W Conrad. She was selected to the Class
2A All-District South Central Team. She is the all-time school leader in
points (1,153), free throw made (211) and three-pointers made (132).
BASEBALL CAMP
The Boone Campus will be holding a baseball camp August 4 and 5 at
Memorial Park in Boone. There will be three different sessions to
accommodate different age groups. The first session of the camp will
be August 4 from 1 to 4 p.m. This session is for ages 14 to 18.
The second session will be August 5 from 9 a.m. to noon and will be for
ages 5 to 8. The final session will be for ages 9 to 13 and will
meet August 5 from 1 to 4 p.m. The cost of the camp is $35 and space is

PIONEERS CONNECTION
The next DMACC Pioneers meeting will be about "Exploring Your
Genealogy." Please call Hedy Ewing at 964-6357 or e-mail her at
haewing@dmacc.edu by 4 p.m. on Mon., Aug. 7, for the next meeting
which is Aug. 10.
STATE FAIR BOOTH
Volunteers are still needed to staff the DMACC booth at the Iowa State
Fair during evenings and weekends. Volunteers will receive free
admission to the fair, a free parking pass and a DMACC

NEW EMPLOYEES
Mason Kolbet is the new Laboratory Technician in the Agriculture and
Natural Resources Department on the Ankeny Campus. His phone number

Mason received his
bachelor's degree in Animal Science from Iowa State University. He
was previously employed by MG Biologics and Iowa State University. Mason is
engaged to Ashlie Wiebbecke. Mason enjoys hunting, fishing, reading
and sheep sheering.
Sheila Aukes is
the new Counselor in the Student Development Department on the Ankeny
Campus. She can be reached at 964-6294.
Sheila received her
bachelor's degree from St. Cloud State University in 1982 and her Master
of Social Work from the University of St. Thomas in 1993. She has
worked in outpatient mental health for the past nine years, most recently
at Mercy Psychiatric Services. She has been an adjunct instructor in
psychology at the West Campus for the past three years. In addition,
Sheila has worked as a school social worker and in the Student Development
Department at the University of Minnesota.
Sheila and her husband,
Dave Funk, have 16-month-old twins. Sheila enjoys reading, baseball,
flying and playing with her two miniature dachshunds.

ECT
CLUB CAR SHOW
The DMACC Electrical
Construction Trades (ECT) Club will present the ECT Club Car Show on Sat.,
July 29. The show will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the Newton Campus.
All classic or modified cars, trucks and motorcycles are welcome to
register for the event for free on site from
9 a.m. to noon that day.
There will be food, beverages and live music featuring Richie Lee and the
Fabulous 50’s. There will also be prize drawings. For more information,
