TAPESTRY AWARDS

DMACC Photography Professor Curt Stahr (center) receives congratulations and a special diversity award from DMACC Diversity Commission Chair Carlos Garza (left) and past chair Dennis Kellogg.  This marks the second year of the awarding of a Tapestry Award.  Curt, as well as DMACC photography students Jennifer Coleman and Katie Glass, created a poster titled, "There is Unity in Diversity," which is displayed on all six DMACC campuses.  It represents the ideals of the Diversity Commission-to create an environment in which diversity is valued.

Sherry Greteman (center), a DMACC Carroll Campus student and Executive Assistant at St. Anthony's Hospital in Carroll, receives congratulations upon being named a Tapestry Award recipient.  She was instrumental in bringing "From Africa to Iowa...An Evening in Tanzania" to the Carroll Campus last February.

DMACC Success Center Adult Literary Consultant Soneeta Mangra-Dutcher (center) receives congratulations upon being named a Tapestry Award recipient.  Soneeta planned a "Decorate a Tree for the Holidays" event and encouraged staff and students to create culturally unique decorations on the tree.

DMACC Arts & Sciences Academic Dean Jim Stick (center) receives congratulations upon being named a Tapestry Award recipient.  Jim has been on every DMACC international year since its inception in 1985. He is also very active in the College's French Chef Exchange, spent time in Japan as part of a Fulbright Faculty Fellowship, was instrumental in getting Ambassador Ken Quinn to bring World Food Prize laureates to a dinner at the Iowa Culinary Institute at DMACC and supports the DMACC London Study Abroad program.

DMACC URBAN CAMPUS COMPETES IN STATE FAIR OUTHOUSES RACES

Verl Long (left to right), Nick Newcomb and Keith Wersinger (partially obstructed) prepare to push the DMACC Urban Campus Outhouse with Melody Riley on the seat in the annual Outhouse Races at the Iowa State Fair.  DMACC finished in third place in this year's event. "While everyone was a bit pooped after the race, the team’s enthusiasm did not go to waste," said Urban Campus Provost Laura Douglas, who watched the races from the Grand Concourse.

Melody Riley wipes the toilet seat clean with her backside and without using her hands before heading to a water trough where she had to find a corn cob among other water soaked vegetables.  She then had to change a roll of toilet paper before sprinting back to her outhouse and then be pushed toward the finish line.   


NEW EMPLOYEES

Kristine BushKristine Bush is the new Nursing Instructor on the Ankeny Campus.  Her phone number is 965-7162.

She earned a B.S.N. from Central Missouri State University and an M.S.N. from Drake University.  She has taught at Mercy College of Health Sciences and worked at Mercy Medical Center, the Hospice of Central Iowa and the Iowa Heart Center.

Kristine has a 20-year old son, Jarrod, and a 17-year old daughter, Rachel, as well as a dog named Jenna and a cat named Hotshot.

Kristine enjoys traveling, flower gardens and reading. 


Jodi DurlamJodi Durlam is the new Surgical Technology Instructor on the Urban Campus.  She is located in Bldg. #2 on the Urban Campus.  Her phone number is 697-7789. 

She graduated from DMACC with an Associate Degree in Nursing. Jodi has 31-years of experience in the operating room and has worked at Lakeview Surgery Center-McFarland Clinic and the Surgery Center of Des Moines.

Jodi is married and has two children, 22-year old Alex and 20-year old Nicole.  Jodi is a big Hawkeye fan who enjoys spending time with her family, competitive waterskiing with her family, reading, traveling and gardening.

Krystal HeringKrystal Hering is the new English Instructor on the Boone Campus.  Her phone number is 433-5212. 

She earned an Associate degree from Wabash Valley College in Mt. Carmel, Illinois; a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Eastern Illinois University and a Master's in Creative Writing from Iowa State University.

Krystal previously taught at Iowa State University.  She enjoys music, films, cooking, rock climbing and volunteering.

Nadine JessenNadine Jessen is the new Chemistry/Physics Instructor on the Carroll Campus.  Her phone number is (712) 792-1755.

She earned a B.S. in Chemistry and an M.S. in Curriculum & Effective Instruction from Buena Vista University.

Nadine has been an adjunct instructor on the Carroll Campus for the past three years.  She has also taught science at Audubon Junior/Senior High School and, prior to that, taught science and mathematics at Cumberland-Massena Junior/Senior High School.

Nadine and her husband, Micah, have three children--Amanda, Stephen and Monica.  Nadine enjoys reading and spending time with her family.   

Corey KopatichCorey Kopatich is the new Academic Advisor in the Career Advantage area on the Ankeny Campus.  His phone number is 965-7172.

Corey earned a degree from Drake University.  He previously was the Educational Specialist for the Des Moines East High School/Iowa Jobs for America's Graduates Program.

He is single and enjoys sports and spending time with his friends.

Adriana Munoz-EspinosaAdriana Munoz-Espinosa is the new Student Services Specialist on the Urban Campus.  Her phone number is 697-7763.

She earned a bachelor's degree in Administration from a college in Guadalajara, Mexico.  She previously worked for the state of Iowa in the Human Rights Department with the Iowa Division of Latino Affairs.

Adriana has two children--14-year old Emmanuel and three-year old Melanie.  Adriana enjoys spending time with her kids, cycling, shopping and watching movies.

John PeaJohn Pea is the new English/Speech Instructor on the Carroll Campus.  His phone number is (712) 792-8326.

He earned a B.A. in Religion from the University of Indianapolis, an M.A. in English from Ball State University and advanced coursework in Speech Communications from Southern Illinois University.

John previously worked in the Interpersonal Communications Department at Bowling Green University and in the Dramatic Arts and Speech Communications Department at Central Michigan University.

John is single and enjoys reading, particularly Native American literature, early American literature, Western American literature, children's literature, rhetoric communication theory and theology.  He also enjoys walking and performing in dramas.  

Priscila PiperPriscila Piper is the Spanish/Interpretation and Translation Instructor on the DMACC Urban Campus.  She is located in Bldg. #1 on the Urban Campus with a phone number of 248-7250.

She earned a B.A. in Linguistics/Communication, a B.A. in Elementary Education and an M.A.E. in Reading and Language Arts--Bilingual Education.

Priscila has taught at Drake University and is married to Urban Campus Instructor Michael Piper. She enjoys choral singing, playing the flute, traveling, walking and swimming.

She earned a Child Development diploma from DMACC and has worked at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.

Kimberly and her husband, Kent, have two daughters--Tabitha and Megan. Kimberly enjoys reading, softball, volleyball and spending time with her family.


Dawn SporlederDawn Sporleder is the new Clerical Assistant in the Physical Plant located in Bldg. #12 on the Ankeny Campus.  Dawn can be reached at x6209.

She graduated from Iowa State University and has worked for Heartland Agri Supply for 20 years and at Des Moines Portable Welding.

She and her husband, Patrick, have a daughter, Kaitlyn and a dog, Chip.  Dawn enjoys reading, basketball, bicycling and volunteering at high school activities.



DMACC EMPLOYEE AWARDS
Congratulations to the following employees who have received DMACC Employee Awards:


Rebecca Brown, Professor, Business Administration, Carroll Campus.  For helping with loading the truck with donations for disaster victims in the Parkersburg/Cedar Falls area on a very hot day.  Her help and support was very much appreciated.

Dave Rubner, Custodian, Carroll Campus.  For being a great support person throughout the entire project of collecting and donating items for the victims of tornadoes and flooding in the Parkersburg/Cedar Falls area.  He even drove the truck to Cedar Falls which was a tremendous help. 


Doris Smith, Cook, Urban Campus.  For always providing extraordinary service to all the DMACC Urban community.  She’s very much appreciated. 


Kent Spencer, Cook, Urban Campus.  For always providing consistent exceptional service to the DMACC Urban community.  He’s very much appreciated.

PIONEERS GARAGE SALE

DMACC Pioneer member Judy (Eriksen) York takes a close look at a vase at the annual DMACC Pioneers Garage Sale held Aug. 21-23 in Bldg.#$13 on the DMACC Ankeny Campus.  All proceeds from the sale go toward scholarships for DMACC students.

PIONEERS CONNECTION

Mark your calendars for the Fall Tailgate Kickoff scheduled for Tues., Sept. 16 in the Lakeview Bistro in Bldg. #7.  The starting time is 5:30 p.m.  Everyone is encouraged to wear your school colors from your high school, college or university OR you may come dressed in DMACC Blue and White.  The function committee is planning a good time for all.  President Denson will give us a brief “State of the College” presentation. Ganesh Ganpat , Executive Director of the DMACC Foundation, will also speak.  Feel free to bring your significant other. There is no charge and reservations are due by 4 p.m., Wed., Sept. 10.  Call 964-6868 to reserve your spot.
