Scholarships / Awards

More than 600 senior institutions in 50 states and provinces provide more than $36 million in scholarships exclusively to Phi Theta Kappa members. Also, Phi Theta Kappa awards each year over $225,000 in scholarships to members and chapter advisors. These include the Guistwhite Scholarship program, which awards to members twenty $5,000 stipends for completion of baccalaureate studies. The Society also provides $80,000 in scholarships for members and faculty advisors to attend the Honors Institute. Chapter advisors compete for Mosal Scholar and Leader Awards, ten $5,000 stipends. International officers receive $2,000 upon completion of their terms of office. Phi Theta Kappa presents students one $1,000 and four $500 awards for winning writings appearing in the Society's honors anthology, Nota Bene. And most currently, the Society offers thirty $1000 Leaders of Promise scholarships to students pursuing an associates degree while enrolled at the community college. The International Phi Theta Kappa website has more information on scholarships or please feel free to contact your DMACC Phi Theta Kappa Advisor.

All USA & All Iowa Academic Teams

Des Moines Area Community College and Phi Theta Kappa actively promotes the All USA and All Iowa Academic Team for 2-Year Colleges.  Each year, at most two students from each of DMACC's 6 campuses can be selected to represent his or her campus on the All Iowa Academic Team.  Students on this prestigious Team are immediately eligible for unique scholarship opportunities designed specifically for them.  Pictured below are the 9 DMACC 2009 All Iowa Academic Team honorees with DMACC Vice President Kim Lindusaka (backfar left ).  This photograph was taken the night of the 2009 All Iowa Academic Team Banquet at the Downtown Des Moines Marriott.  Toni Linberg (front row far right) was named as the 2009 New Century Scholar on the 2009 All Iowa Team.  As the New Century Scholar, Toni received a $2000 scholarship because she was the highest scoring application on the Team.

SCHOLARSHIPS

(EXCLUSIVELY FOR MEMBERS OF PHI THETA KAPPA)

One of the benefits to being a member of Phi Theta Kappa is having access to a large pool of transfer scholarships designed exclusively for Phi Theta Kappa members.  Follow the link to read the numerous transfer scholarships to institutions of higher learning in Iowa:

IOWA PHI THETA KAPPA TRANSFER SCHOLARSHIPS

This information can also be found at:  http://www.ptk.org/schol/scholdir/us/ia.htm

A complete listing of institutions offering Phi Theta Kappa transfer scholarships can be found at:  http://www.ptk.org/schol/schol_dir.htm

There are other scholarships, such as the All Iowa and All USA Academic Team scholarships—and you can find these specific scholarships listed at:  http://www.ptk.org/schol/all_state/IA.htm (Please remember you do NOT have to be a member of Phi Theta Kappa to be on this Team.)

Also members of Phi Theta Kappa are looked at as “invested” transfer students.  They have an advantage when they apply for other institutional scholarships.  For example, Iowa State University offers the Roy Carver Transfer Scholarship ($5200, renewable a second year).  Students with a solid work record, grade record, and service record are ideal candidates for this scholarship.  These ARE what members of Phi Theta Kappa are!  This last spring (spring 2007) two Boone Campus students, also members of Phi Theta Kappa, earned the Roy Carver Scholarship.
