The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women’s volleyball team split four matches at the Kishwaukee Tournament Oct. 15-16 at Wisconsin Dells, Wis.
The Bears opened tournament play with a 3-0 (25-8, 25-18, 25-8) win against South Suburban Community College on Oct. 15 and then suffered a 3-1 (18-25, 25-22, 16-25, 17-25) setback at the hands of eighth-ranked Oakland Community College in their second match of the day.
On Oct. 16, DMACC lost to Columbus State Community College 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 15-25, 24-26) and then closed out the tournament with a 3-2 (25-22, 11-25, 20-25, 25-19, 15-9) win against Rock Valley Community College. The four-match split gives DMACC a 19-14 record.
Sophomore Sarah Davidson of Springville and sophomore Mikayla Overturf of Nora Springs paced DMACC against South Suburban with nine and eight kills respectively. Overturf added three blocks and sophomore setter Natalie Weis of Bettendorf had 29 assists and nine digs. Freshman Elizabeth Ihnen of Sheldon contributed four service aces.
Ihnen and freshman Maggie Vondrak of Sioux City had 15 and 11 kills respectively against Oakland and freshman Mary Jo Twiford of Sioux City had three blocks. Weis and Vondrak contributed two service aces each and Weis finished with 39 assists. Freshmen Jamie Buchmann of Sioux City and Sarah Kirkegaard of Cedar Rapids led the Bears in digs with 15 and 11 respectively.
Vondrak and Ihnen had 14 and 13 kills respectively against Columbus State with Ihnen also contributing two blocks. Weis had 38 assists and Buchmann added 14 digs.
Vondrak led DMACC against Rock Valley with 16 kills and sophomore Christina Richter of Bancroft added 12 kills. Twiford contributed five blocks, Weis had 41 assists and Richter and Vondrak had two service aces apiece. Sophomore Sarah Tjaden of Lake View finished with 14 digs.
DMACC will host Indian Hills Community College Oct. 19 at the DMACC gymnasium in Boone.
