The Ellsworth Community College (ECC) men’s basketball team took advantage of poor shooting by the DMACC men’s basketball team and handed the Bears a 68-62 loss February 1 at Iowa Falls.
DMACC, ranked seventh in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, connected on just 27 percent of its shots (20-of-75) in losing its fourth game of the season. The Bears are 19-4 overall and 5-2 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Association (ICCAC) standings.
DMACC made just seven of 31 shots from the field in the first half and trailed 35-21 at halftime. The Bears outscored the Panthers 41-33 in the second half despite hitting just 13 of 44 field goal attempts, but couldn’t overcome ECC’s 14-point advantage in the first half.
Sophomore Kurtis Phillips of Adelaide, Australia, led DMACC with 14 points. Sophomore Rico Saldana of New York City, N.Y., added 13 points and a team-high 12 rebounds, and sophomores Nate Mason of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Cole Martin of Omaha, Neb., scored 12 and 11 points respectively. Freshman LaTrell Visor of Aurora, Ill., led DMACC in assists with five and also had three blocked shots. Martin contributed four assists.
Alfreeman Flowers had 19 points and 15 rebounds to pace ECC. The Panthers, who improved to 9-12 overall and 4-3 in the ICCAC, had a 55-43 advantage on the boards.
DMACC is idle until February 8 when it travels to Estherville to face Iowa Lakes Community College.
