Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) sophomore guard Kannon Burrage of East Moline, Ill., has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at the University of Texas-San Antonio (TSA).
Burrage signed with the Roadrunners after considering Montana State, Eastern Illinois, Illinois State and the State University of New York-Albany.
“He visited Texas-San Antonio and fell in love with the school,” DMACC men’s basketball coach B.J. McGinn said. “It’s a very nice place and they are an NCAA Division I tournament team. I think it’s kind of neat that we’ve got a kid going to team that made the NCAA Tournament field this year.”
McGinn said TSA graduates one starter from its NCAA Tournament team and recruited Burrage to fill that void.
“They are going to have an opportunity to make a strong run again next year,” McGinn said. “Kannon will play off the ball, but has the ability to play other positions. He can score in different ways, which is good.”
DMACC finished the 2010-11 season at 23-8 and 8-6 in the Iowa Community Athletic Conference (ICCAC). Burrage led the Bears in scoring with a 21.1 average. He was 220 of 488 from the field, including 62-of-192 from 3-point range, and made 130 of 185 free throw attempts. Burrage finished the season with 632 points, 154 rebounds, 67 assists, 37 steals and eight blocked shots.
Burrage scored a season-high 36 points in DMACC’s 77-60 win over Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) on Feb. 19.
“He’s going to graduate in May and that’s very appealing to four-year coaches because they don’t have to sit around and wait and see if he’s going to quality,” McGinn said.
TSA is a member of the Southern Conference. Joining the Roadrunners basketball team gives Burrage an opportunity to play against DMACC teammate Hal Bateman of Davenport, who has committed to Stephen F. Austin University. The Lumberjacks are also a member of the Southern Conference.
